  1. Looking for a bit of informed advice if anyone can help? Out driving yesterday, all was normal until I joined the dual carriageway and accelerated up towards 70 mph. As I approached this speed, the engine temperature warning light came on and the temperature gauge needle shot up to the red zone. I immediately decelerated and went to pull over, to find that when I got back to 55 mph, the warning light went off and the gauge stabilised in the normal position. I pulled over at the next lay by and checked all the usual things (hoses, water expansion tank, oil, radiator) for leaks and capacities to find no issues at all. I continued my journey and all was well for about 15 miles until I tested it out again by accelerating up towards 70, where the same thing happened, followed by the return to normal when I decelerated. This happened twice more on more journey under the same circumstances. On arrival at my destination (60 miles from home), I called the RAC for advice as I am a member. Their technical geek on the phone advised that it sounded like a water pump issue, that being that the pump would have to work harder at higher revs to pump the coolant around, but could obviously manage at lower speeds. However, they wouldn't be able to fix it at the roadside (obviously), so would recover me home, advising me not to drive it any further than I needed to - or do so at my own risk. I called the local garage this morning who service the car (not a Jag dealership). Thoughts revolved around the "possibility" of a faulty water pump, although he pretty much dismissed this as it would either work or it wouldn't, in his opinion the speed of the car wouldn't be a factor. Possible thermostat sticking issue, although again he thought that unlikely. His other suggestion was that the radiator could be clogged up with solidified, corroded coolant, reducing the ability for the coolant to be circulated completely around the engine. Typically being summer, his books are full for the next week or so, he can't fit me in until middle of next week. When I asked about driving it until then, he said it shouldn't be a problem at speeds where the temperature remained "normal". I would much appreciate it if anyone is able to offer me any advice or share similar issues? Can anyone confirm (or rubbish!) the advice i have been given already? I really don't need a big bill for this at the moment (it's a ten year old diesel, with PLENTY on the clock! It could be "cut your losses" time, much as i enjoy driving it!
  2. For some reason, the AM reception on my radio has gone very poor. On some channels that I regularly use, there is just a crackly hissing noise, as if the station is "off tune", For example, Radio 5 Live, which I used to get no problem at all on freq 693, is totally unreachable (if that's the word!). I am able to receive freq 909, which was always worse than 693, just about OK, but only with the volume turned up much louder than normal. FM is absolutely fine, no problem with that whatsoever, so I don't think its an aerial problem. Anything I could investigate?

  5. The interior (not boot) mats in my X Type estate need replacing. Looking on line, a lot of (non Jaguar) sellers quote that their mats won't fit the estate. Apart from going to Jaguar, anyone know of a decent site that sells mats for an estate?

Frank, Thank you, checking the MOTs is a great insight and I have to say, in this case raises no real red flags, only advisories on tyres (which will have been replaced by now as they were getting low 15,000 miles ago, and a standard advisory which has stated: "Under-trays fitted obscuring some underside components, Engine covers fitted obscuring some components in the engine bay." for the last 4 years. I'm guessing these trays are a standard fit, but this particular garage has chosen to note it where others haven't in the past! The only other concern about its mileage is the state of the clutch as it is a manual transmission. I'll ask for the service history when I see them (they claim they have the full history) to see if it has been changed. Not sure what the life expectancy of a clutch would be, I know it depends on the type of use (motorways/urban cycle), but I'm taking a guess at the mileage suggesting a lot of longish journeys. Any thoughts would be welcome.
  7. Hello, new to here, would appreciate any advice/opinions. I am thinking of buying an X-Type estate, which looks very nice, apart from rust appearing under the silver Jaguar bar above the rear number plate. This slightly concerns me, does anyone know if this is a common fault? The only other fault I can find with the appearance is the pocket on the back of the front passenger seat is ripped from the stitching on the left side, although the seat itself isn't damaged. Now I have one more concern, it is 9 years old and has 158,000 on the clock. I would never normally buy a car with that sort of mileage, but this is a lovely looking car (rust aside), with the Jaguar name,so I am tempted. Would anyone have any concerns about reliability with that mileage, or should it "keep on going". Anything I should be wary of? Timing belt change is top of my mind, I will check that. Price looks competitive, actually slightly under what the book quotes, again, made me a bit wary, probably been for sale a while? I haven't been able to speak to anyone about the car yet, spotted it on the forecourt when the showroom was closed. Ian
