Hi folks Am driving a 2.2D auto 08 facelift model, done 195000 miles. had to make a long drive to and from Cornwall a couple of weeks back and on the return home after about 200 miles straight nearly home and the amber coil light came on with gearbox fault indicated. Car would still change gear (auto) but the turbo wasn’t working, was very sluggish indeed. Pulled into a petrol station switched off held my breath and counted to ten and then switched back on - absolutely fine… have driven it 2 weeks since with no issue at all - if I had to swear to it perhaps the engine is a bit ‘breathy’ at lower speeds 20-40 mph especially while accelerating, but once I get to 60mph+ it’s smooth as ever. i had a turbo replacement at around 160000 miles so that’s presumably not the issue. only other issue recently was an abs sensor fault which was fixed in half an hour, just an electrical connection. Might be connected though I suppose…? obviously it’s an old car and done some serious miles but once you’re on cruise it’s lovely. I love driving it just don’t want it to be a sign of anything serious or potential major failure. grateful for any thoughts. cheers all.
  2. Hi Anthony. sorry not to reply to your post sooner. I too have had the exact same problem - it happened about 6 times in a few months a few years back, like you fairly shortly after purchase. if you search in my profile or under gearbox or similar in the x-type forum you should find mine and quite a few other threads on the subject. I like you have no mechanical knowledge at all so appreciate how dismaying and worrying these events are, but my own experience is that it is not as bad as it seems. Most diagnoses seem to point to an issue with either the EGR or turbo - but in my case a check from the garage revealed no problem with either of these items - they did actually replace the EGR in the end but said they could find absolutely nothing wrong with the old one but they had a new one and thought they might as well give it a go. I didn’t replace the turbo as that was pretty expensive and again the garage could not find any reason to go down that road. Bizarrely what cleared it up for me was actually just a service and oil change. I had it done on schedule and since then have never had the problem again. I commented on this to the garage and they said it was probably some glitch on the feedback from the turbo or exhaust etc and an additive they had at service might have cleared something. so a bit of diesel injector fluid might well solve your problems too. my advice is also to find a decent independent jag specialist who will recognise all these little quirks with the x type and know the back routes and anecdotal solutions which do often work and save you a packet in the meantime. Or just a good mechanic whom you trust. if you’re still having problems try a bit of fuel additive like wynns and see if that helps. Or just a routine service before any other costly interventions. as I say I’m not a mechanic and only speaking purely from my own experience which I hope may be helpful - obviously you may turn out to have a more serious problem but hopefully not. My car was purchased at 108000 miles and not just coming up to 167000 and still going strong. good luck Nathan

  4. Hi, driving 2.2 diesel auto. I had just driven about 140 miles on motorways at a very consistent 70 (ish) mph when the DPF warning came on with amber light. Then (bizarrely) it went off when I came into the residential area and trundled along at 30 for a few mins. Car behaved perfectly normal otherwise. Might this be a sign of something more serious? Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks.
  5. Presumably it’s the 2.2 diesel auto? If so, I had this problem - would come completely out of the blue exactly as you’ve described. It went away after a service and then reoccurred a few months later. Try some diesel fuel additive every few fill ups - the problem has never reoccurred since I started doing this.

  7. I’ve used MRL car sales in kesgrave - they have a garage out the back. For specialist jag work it’s the Jag centre Norwich.
  8. PS looking online I can only find Millers Diesel Eco-Max (rather than Eco-Plus) - I presume that is the same thing?
  9. Thanks Peter. Very useful knowledge. I had the Jag terracleaned shortly after I purchased, just as a precaution, over 2 years ago. I mentioned the glow plug problem (it was the only blip with an otherwise perfectly running car) to the terrclean guy and he also mentioned injectors, and said if they are dodgy at all then the terraclean will finish them off. But we revved the car and poked around the engine a bit and couldn't see any cause for concern, so I went ahead - I did notice an improvement in performance and mpg, and the glow plug blip has not resurfaced since (until the last couple of weeks) - but this is now 2 years and 32,000 miles later! I've never used an additive, but I know my garage does put one in when they do a service or check up, so perhaps this has been helping keeping things running smoothly. So I'll try a dose of Millers, and will keep you posted. Thanks for your help!
  10. Hi everyone, Driving x-type auto 2.2d at 144500 miles. Owned for 2.5 years, always regularly serviced. I now have a really weird problem - when I start the car from cold it starts and drives absolutely fine. If I then switch off and leave the car for around 5/10 mins, eg to refuel or just a break from driving, on restart I get a flashing glow plug symbol and amber gear box fault. Car is in limp home mode and will drive ok up to about 40 miles an hour. If I then drive like this for a bit and get the engine warmed up again, pull over, switch off and restart, amber light goes away. But if I switched off and left it for five mins, guaranteed amber flashing. Next morning, from cold, no problem. Every time from cold it starts fine. Every time I pull over for 5/10/15 mins, flashing amber... Its regular as clockwork. I always leave the car to run for a good minute or two after long journeys as I hear this is good for the turbo and wondered if this might have something to do with it...? I've had the flashing glow plugs occasionally in the past but its never been a major concern, but now its happening every time I refuel which is obviously a total pain! (Fortunately I never refuel on motorways!!) Very grateful for any ideas! Liam
  11. Hi - yes basically it was a package from a jag specialist (not main dealer) to upgrade to high spec lights. My techie is near Norwich but if you call round your local independent places you might find a similar offer. I can’t provide any technical details I’m afraid, more than it has been well worth it - about £350 all told, bearing in mind I would have had to had the light fittings replaced anyway.
  12. I’m no expert but I had a similar experience with gearbox fault amber warning, came on 3 or 4 times over a few months. Happened always when accelerating hard so Thought it was probably the turbo, but when I next had an oil change and service it’s never reoccurred - 18 months later no issues of any kind. I’ve kept a close eye on others having similar issues on this site and it seems these gearbox faults do flag up and then go away again - you wouldn’t be the first for sure. Hopefully it won’t recur. Good luck. I’m also on 2.2d auto.

A couple of years ago I had headlight fittings broken - so rather than pay to have them replaced bit the bullet and had the whole lot fitted with modern spec lights - set me back about £350 but was well worth it - and has transformed the car as lights were pretty poor before. Just a thought, a sort of upgrade which might be worth looking into. Good luck. L
  14. I've had some issues with suspension this winter - my local jag man thinks it might be the anti roll bar which is knocking a little bit - but I doubt season related. They'll have alook next time I take the car in but not worth worrying about in the meantime... But I'd be interested to see how your car fares once the weather gets warmer and if the issue goes away.
