I have a 54 plate 2.1 v6 petrol x type and a noise has started from the top of the engine as described above. It seems to be starting about 3000 rpm but then, I don't know because of the extra noise as I increase speed goes. I have done a Oil change even though it had only done 5000 miles, no loss of power, everything working as it should just a very worrying noise. Any ideas?

Oh well it was the death rattle, big ends. What a shame I have had over 30 new cars over the years and never enjoyed driving anything like this, everything else spot on. Engine reconditioner I know (being in the aftermarket for 35 years) and he reckons the parts are not available. Good bye great friend

79000 miles I don't know ta bit early to say, can I drop sump in situ and replace them? Can I get bearings? I would love to do that even a replacement engine. The boss wants me to get something more economical but I always wanted a Jag and it was my pride and joy

Hi John

As Andy says that's such a shame, for a car with relatively low mileage.

i am sure I've seen a post and pictures regarding the removal of the sump while the engine is still in situ, unfortunately I can't remember if it was an S type or X type, I believe your engine sits differently in the engine bay to the S? I'll have a look and post the link if I can find it again.

Do you have an idea of the costs involved in regards to removing your engine and replacing the bearings versus a recon?

Regards

Steve

Hi John

Had a little look around and found these, looks very complex!

You will need to decide of course whether the information will work for you?

Thanks Claws, mine is not awd so I will keep looking for links to do the job without transfer box. I can pick up a engine for a couple of hundred quid, say another fifty for Oil, filters, because it's off belts maybe even drive belt tensioner as I said I worked in the aftermarket for the biggest warehouse distributor (the one with the green vans,) so I still get everything at cost. Just need someone to drop  the engine at a reasonable cost to make it cost effective. Coming up to 68 it is to much for me to do.

Hi Claws, my son does a lot of off roading land rovers etc and the saving grace for years has been a American product is called am tech restore which I have seen on other Jag forums. I am going to see another engine reconditioner next week, probably the best in Merseyside to get another opinion but keeping all options open. Even looked at buying a diesel x type to keep me going the boss get better mpg I keep a Jag while I can get a donor second hand petrol engine put in.Because I have had a company car for so long I had to go for a 2.1 engine because no no claims bonus on insurance. So I will keep fighting to keep my cat

Hi John,

I had a company car for 27 years but I found a a way to get my no claims bonus.  I got a letter from our Fleet manager with a statement that I had not had a culpable accident for over 8 years.

I got full no claims bonus.

Regards,

Peter.

Hello the infamous "old Peter" I actually got a letter from work after I had left, on "quote me happy" I quoted I have had 15 years ncb and without any proof they quoted £425 fully comp, on renewal they reduced it to £387p a. No ncb shown on any documentation far cheaper than any other quote. Definitely made me happy. Regards John
