Key Fob re-programming

Hi

I have just picked up a 57 plate S-Type 2.7D which came with 2 key fobs. One works fine but the other looks like new but is totally inoperative. I guessed it was the spare and the battery had expired, so I replaced the battery but it still doesn't work.

Several searches on t'internet have revealed that it needs re-coding to the car (along with the one that works) and that it can ONLY be done by a dealer with IDS??

Can anyone confirm whether this is true and, if so, how much it is likely to cost?

Thanks

Maggle

Hello Maggie, I purchased an S-Type last year, and I only got one key.

I was told it would cost upwards of £250 to get a new one.

In the costing was the price to program the key which, at the main dealer was around £45 +vat.

Being a bit of a "I'm not paying that" kind of chap I found an independant Jaguar dealer who did the job for £35 +vat, in doing so he quoted me a lot lower rate for all the servicing etc.

Just an idea to look on the web, and tap in independant Jaguar dealer/workshops in you area.

In the end I bought a used fob, a new transponder, and blade. All in £115.

Hope this helps

Kind regards Trevor.

I needed a second fob for my S-type. I managed to get a key and fob via eBay for £3. I threw the key away and had the fob matched to the car. Independent locksmiths with the necessary kit (avoid national chains and call centres) will do this very competitively. In my case they charged me £20 inc VAT. My jag is 2001 and, whilst fobs for several Jag models can be reset from within the car, this one cannot. I had mine done by keysisus.co.uk in Colchester.   Excellent while you wait (10 mins) service. I was delighted. Don't forget to replace the battery in the fob before getting it recoded. Oh! and they will need the car, your keys and the fob that needs programming.

Same thing happened to me when I got the XJ Supersport about six weeks ago , but as it was still under warranty the stealership fixed it , said it was the mini motherboard or something .

Kingspeed :

I'm also going to use an independent garage to get the Jag serviced, they are a lot cheaper than the franchise garages , and providing they use genuine Jaguar parts and follow the proper guidelines the warranty will not be affected.

We have a list of independent garages recommended by the members on one of the forums.

I had this problem with an XF - this is a keyless start/stop and if you go to a jag dealership, they will tell you they cant recode it and you will need a new fob and key - total comes to around £370. I bought a new metal key part from e bay for £14.90 (£85 from jag) inc cutting to shape. I bought a new fob from e bay for £35. I then went to my local jag specialist in Droitwich who reprogrammed it during a routine 40,000 mile service. Put new batteries in both fobs for £8 and never charged me for the reprogramming. The total service charge inc a couple of non-service items came to £375!

Its a bit far from Oxford but I can giver you the garage name if you wish.

I believe the S type is nowhere as bad as this and there are several people on E bay who can do it - I did my old XJ8 using instruction supplied with a replacement clicker - easy job using the igniton switch and headlamp flasher. Total was £15

Just a personal thing, but I think dealerships just take people for a ride compared to independent garages . Their hourly is usually very high and an independent garage can get you Genuine Jaguar parts for far less than the dealerships .

An example; I recently damaged my wing mirror (someone left their bin in the road) , everything still works perfectly apart from the  mirror not closing in when I lock the car .

For a new mirror the dealership quoted £700 (without fitting), the exact same mirror online £305, still didn't bother though.

About the S-Type fob reprogramming - I tried all the switching on and off, flashing, boot open/closed, door open/closed, ad nauseam. When I went to the lock people they looked at that option but quickly established that they were in to a plug-in situation which then required (via key reader) a software token (which they have to buy). The re-coded fob is traceable to their machine and time stamped. Apparently there are variations to lock systems fitted to s-types of this age - the security of this set-up must be better than being able to flick a few switches to "clone" a fob.
