Hi all, i am new to the club and hope someone can advise me.My 2,0ltr diesel engine starts ok but on gentlr acceleration the engine "stutters".If i accelearte hard, the power picks up but i black out the surrounding area with smoke!I have been told by various sources that my problem is anything from the egr valve(which i have cleaned) to the fuel pump/filter or injector failure.

Any advise would be gratefully received

Hi there, I have very similar problems on my X-Type, 96k miles. Slight hesitation occasionally when cruising, power ok but black smoke when accelerating hard. I have purchased, but not yet used, an additive called Archoil AR6400-D. I will post my results, it claims to rectify just this type of problem.

hi , thanks for your reply, however, since posting this query, i have tried an engine additive(Redex) and fitted a new EGR valve, but

neither have resolved the problem.Have reached the "might as well exchange it for a hyundai I10!!

Please keep me informed if you manage to resolve the problem.

Many thanks

Well I have to say that having recently paid £90 to have my X-Type 2.0d Terraclean-ed (if that's a word) I am very happy with the results.

My reason for having this done were twofold;

1. black smoke on acceleration - all but gone, still al slight amount but nothing like it was

2. Slight hesitation whilst cruising, ranging from almost unnoticeable to quite violent, no loss of power though - this has gone completely. This alone was worth the £90.

Terraclean claims; improved mpg and pickup on acceleration.

1. improved mpg - jury still out but it appears to have improved a little. Only done about 150 miles, need at least a months driving to be sure.

2. Improved pickup - again jury still out, I "think" I feel a smoother acceleration but this could be psychosomatic. Not sure if I will ever know as I had no data on acceleration just prior to the cleaning process.

That's all Folks

Hi all again:  I had to resort to taking my car to an engine repairshop where they fitted a new turbo hose - total cost £139. The lack of power problem is now solved , but the irregular tickover(slow to return to minimum revs) is still there. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated

.

Cheers all

Hi Bloodnock

It sounds like carbon deposits within the air intake system causing your idle problem.

The intake manifold tends to suffer from carbon and is easily rectified by removing it and cleaning with a degreaser.

Also, check all breather pipes are clear and also secure (no splits, kinks, etc).

I would start there before condemning any electronic components.

I have a similar problems on My xtype 2.0 diesel, on tick over the car revs slightly on its own then settles down, and feels lumpy when driving, on acceleration, lot's of embarrassing black smoke, I had a Carbon clean service done on Monday which has helped, I've switched to vpower fuel, the EGR valve looks brand new ( I only bought the car last week, and noticed that it failed it's MOT on excessive ommisions, i assume that was put on to gets pass), it just feels like there's too much fuel, I've also noticed that the MPG has dropped to 38, on steady driving, I've bought a blanking plate , a silicon hose to fit next week, but any other suggestions would be appreciated

Welcome to the club, Valentine.

My son has an X type with the 2.0 litre diesel engine and when it emitted some black smoke a can of Diesel Magic did a lot of good.

I am unsure whether the blanking plate for the EGR valve will help or hinder the emissions problem.

Regards,

Peter.

The blanking plate can cause an increase in emission as the egr valve is put there to reduce the emissions i have had major problems and having the changed the EGR valve and putting in premium diesel had no further problems, i asked four or five garages about removing or blanking the EGR and they all said they would not recommend I think its a suck it and see you will get the engine management light coming on unless you get it mapped out when you carry out the blanking
