Stype value?

Hi guys, I hope someone can help us. I have an elderly lady customer whose husband passed away 5 years ago, she now wants to sell their s type. It's a T reg 3.0 v6 se in sea frost silver with satnav which they have owned from new , it hasn't been used for 5 years and has been stored in a garage so has no mot or tax. It has only covered 17,000 miles! Can any one tell us the value of the car as she has had a couple of traders make her offers which seem low. We appreciate the putting an accurate value without seeing it is difficult but a genuine guide price would be appreciated.

Jim .

Just having a look on Autotrader. and that year doesn't seem to bring very much, less then £2000 at best .

But with such a low mileage the car is hardly used, I would suggest she bides her time and sells it privately .

I shall burst of an email to my friendly salesman and see what he thinks and get back to you .

Trevor

Jim,

This is what he said, not very encouraging I'm afraid .

" Sounds like a nice car but valuations are a little hard – does it start and move?

i imagine she’s having offers between £500 and £1000?

I’d love to say it’s worth drastically more but I think given the work needed it would be difficult.

What offers have you been getting? "

ATB,

Trevor

Welcome to the Club, Jim.

I m inclined to agree with Trevor.  An early S Type with such a low mileage is a good investment.

Personally, I would have the car serviced, and a good bodywork detailing, new tyres, and get an MOT.

I have had a good look round on various sites and in my opinion the traders are looking at a gift horse.  They know that they can get a good price for a car that must have been very early in the series, and with a mileage that says the car is in mint condition.

Some offers for cars that old are under £1000, but they have big mileages.  However there are some out there with asking prices of over £5,000.

I think that with an MOT and new tyres you could advertise it in a Jaguar Magazine and ask for £6,500 and see what replies you have.

Regards

Peter.

Peter,

I agree with you, if I had the space and time I would certainly have it. I think the price you suggest is not out of order, as to all intensive purposes it is nearly a "new" car .

I would rather give it away then sell it to a trader for £500- £1000 !

Trevor

Hi Trevor,

That car that Jim mentioned is just run in.  A good service by an expert mechanic will be the medicine it needs.  It will then get, in my opinion, the kind of owner it needs.

The car has also lots of goodies in it, too, and all the sat nav needs is £30 spent on an up to date disc.

My car has the same goodies and with 48k on the clock cost £9,500.

Regards,

Peter.

Wow! Thanks guys for the fast response, why can't other forums be as efficient?

You're right Trevor, she's had two offers, one at £500 and another at £900. I'm quite tempted myself but already have a few projects, I wouldn't know what to offer her without feeling it should of been more and I really would like a s type r .

I did suggest she got a mot etc on the car but she's adamant she doesn't want to spend any money on it, also suggested the option of putting it on eBay but she lives on her own and has no family local so understandably doesn't want random people coming round to

view. It is a nice car though and still has that 'new' smell when you open the door.... Maybe I'll sleep on it!

Good idea, Trevor.

When I did a course on Auto Maintenance, we had the pleasure of working on a side valve engine, plus a sick Hillman Minx.

There could also be a technical college that does auto engineering who could borrow it for a term and work on the mechanical bits.

The traders know how to make money and we both know that an offer of £500 means that they will stick 4 cheap tyres on it, put on a new battery, and then with a MOT on it they will look around for an enthusiast to buy it for about £5k.

Regards,

Peter.
