Hello & Traction Control?

Hello to you all, after many years of wanting a Jaguar I have just bought one for 'weekend trips' and am very pleased with it. I have a question - I ASSUMED that as a 4WD car it would have traction control as standard - but I am now not sure!  It is a 2004 3.0 petrol automatic SE model. The car does not have a Traction Control (TC) disengage button that the manual suggests it might - just a red light in that location (near gear select lever). It does have a message centre - the manual suggests that, if TC operates it will be displayed there (I think??). I have telephoned a Jaguar specialist (who was not sure) and had a look on line (Parker's car guide - for example - seems to suggest the car has TC as standard). I would be disappointed if I have bought a car without TC - CAN YOU HELP (Could my car NOT have TC?)? Cheers Fred T

Welcome to the Club, Fred.

Traction control?  I had a X Type 2.5 litre petrol with AWD, but as far as I remember it did not have traction control.  I have since heard that TS was an optional extra.

The Model  had was the SE.

I am going to have a look around and see what I can find.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi Fred,

From what I could find in a short time the Jaguar X Type AWD had some technical difference made to its transmission in 2004/05.

Not being a technical wizard I would not hazard what the differences were and what was their effect.

I will continue and see what I can find as regards to specification for the various models.  At the time of your car's manufacture Jaguar was owned by Ford who were very good on engineering but lousy on paperwork, and handbooks were sometimes not up to date.

Regards,

Peter.

Hello Peter, I think this is the way to 'reply' to you (by replying to this topic?). Thank you for your help with this. I think I may well have a car without TC then? I am disappointed with myself for not understanding this BEFORE buying it .... It is, otherwise, a lovely car.  Could I ask you a 'supplemental'?  I am not an engineer (clearly!); Am I right in thinking that my car (if it does not have TC) will put power to both the front AND rear wheels at all times and therefore (at times of poor road traction) will at least be trying to find grip at both ends? Help very much appreciated, Fred

Hi Fred.

I am not an engineer either, but before I buy anything I do a bit of research, although on occasion, my wife buys something because she likes the colour, which is how I came to get an X Type AWD manual Petrol in Red when I wanted an S Type auto diesel in Blue.

The X type AWD is very sure footed and hugs the road in all weather/  Jaguar cars are usually rear wheel drive and the X Type AWD version panders to that a bit by supplying 60% of power to the rear wheels and 40% to the front under normal circumstances, and can shift the power to get best traction when required.  I had a snowy winter with mine without a single problem and would still have it had it not been stolen.  Having looked around I think your car will have traction control.  The S Type has Dynamic Stability control which can be switched off.

You will enjoy your Jaguar.

Regards,

Peter.

Hello Peter and others. I have been lucky enough to find the original (contemporary) price list with the car's paperwork. It lists standard and optional items. It shows the car as having (as standard) 'Jaguar Traction' (as opposed to 'Traction Control' for the 2WD cars. I have had a very quick look at 'Jaguar Traction' on line and found very little at the moment!! But, also having looked at some YouTube footage of the 4WD operating into snow/ice, I am now reassured that my car has some clever engineering/software keeping us safe :-)  Fred

Hello Charles and Peter, it has been good to get kind replies to my posted question. As I mentioned, this is my first Jaguar, and it has been nice to know that there are good people like yourselves out there (and clearly enjoying the Jag experience too). Have fun - and may meet you one day. Cheers, Fred
