Gearbox, DSC, Parking Brake Fault then No Brake Lights after new battery

My 2009 XF 2.7D Luxury has been displaying the following warning messages:

- Gearbox Fault

-DSC Not Available

Parking BrakeFault

The low batterylight has occasionally come on since I've had the car

Given that the car drove perfectly with these warning lights on and that the car was on it's original 2008 dated battery, I thought that a new battery would cure the problem.

However after fitting a new battery, all the warning lights above came on again AND the Cannot Apply Parking Brake warning message and constant buzzer warning for this comes on when driving. Also, after fitting the new battery the brake lights don't come on! I had a new brake light switch fitted but the brake lights still don't come on!

The low battery warning still comes on occasionally too even though the battery is brand new.

I've taken the car to an independent and a specialist but neither had the latest Jaguar software so it's booked into the main dealer next week.

Greatly appreciate any advice - while the new battery was a waste of time and caused the new problems at least fitting a new battery proved that it wasn't the original battery causing the warning lights.

Given that the new battery hasn't cured it, I'm thinking along the lines of maybe a software upgrade (car hasn't been serviced at main dealer for 18mths) or a computer reset with the latest Jaguar software could possibly resolve the issue?

Thanks in advance

Welcome to the Club, Clive.

Whatever the problem is I think it must be electrical/software.

Your engine is the same one as mine, and they are solid engines, so I am concluding it is  a sensor issue and that a sensor is sending a wrong message somewhere.

Bearing in mind I trained as an accountant  and that I don't like oily hands anymore, so I think that the trip to a a main dealer might solve the problem [expensively].

Good Luck.

Peter.

hi clive and welcome to the club. i think you done the right thing buying a new battery, as your car is now 5yrs old. mines 6. and i bought a new bosch battery for it in april. 1stly can i ask were you bought it from. 2ndly have you tested it. i would buy a tester meter from any car place test the voltage. could be its been sitting on the shelf that long and went flat. just a thought. 3rdly if you know a friendly indy mecanic with a diaognostic machine get them to stick it on the car see what it picks up. but i know if you have dissconected the old battery and then reconected the new one. you will have to adjust all the settings. when i installed mine i used jump leads to both batteries so that no connections were lost. its worth testing your new battery before it goes in to main dealer costs ect ect. but in the end they should fix the probs. charlie

peter. i had put the jag into hibernation for the winter, bought a trickle charge thingie off eBay keep the battery in good nick over the winter.was out side yesterday checking over the vauxhall daily runner giving it a winter check over. noticed that the power steering fluid was a milky red colour.  said to my mate (garage owner) he says thats emulsifonation and to take it into them seemingly very common problem with the insignia. so have booked it in for tue next week. its only 10mts old, so jags back out. charlie

Under no circumstances should control settings be lost when disconnecting a battery. The ECU will have a back up up capacitor which acts as a battery holding enough charge for such things as control settings, sorry but this is a fallacy.

I also have a trickle charger thats used for winter storage of my car which as permanent connections to the battery which then goes to a small plug that retrospectively connects to the trickle charger adapter, quite a useful piece of equipment if you are not using the vehicle for long periods in fact I also have an inverter 12V to 240V so plug this into the cigarette lighter socket when away on long holidays then plug the trickle charger into the inverter, obviously it a continuous supply of charger charging battery, and battery supplying inverter

Many thanks for the reply, I'll get the battery tested.

It has been suggested elsewhere that the footbrake swich could be causing the issue - it might be worth me getting this replaced.

With all due respect is it really worth changing a piece of equipment and switches at the whim of a suggestion? Each and every item is at a cost which brings further costs having it fitted. Take it to the dealer who should have the depth of experience to deal with the issue and Jaguars technical support on the end of a phone

Jaguar XFS 3.0D 2011:

just had the same problem with " Gearbox Fault. Parking Brake Fault, DSC not available" and rear brake lights not working. The AA have diagnosed the problem as being a faulty brake switch which is interlinked with the other systems and setting off the Fault warnings. Having checked the logged Fault codes for no other issues the Car is reported as being safe to drive to the dealer to have the switch changed, noting that the brake lights aren't working!

Hi Simon and Welcome to the Club,

I happened to have few minutes so took a look around to see what I could learn about this problem. Have you changed or had to re-charge your battery recently or had a Low Battery Warning of any kind? If you have it may only be necessary to re-programme the Battery Power Management System (IPMS) as this can be the true cause rather than a failed brake switch. See the item below from Cat Magazine and the link below it to the XF page where you'll find some interesting data. Hopefully your owners manual will provide the info on how to do this.

If the brake switch is dud - a new switch can be had for around £30 but it seems fitting it is a bit of a faff so you could expect a labour charge for 2-3 hours if you take it to a dealer or indie.

LIGHTS
Cambiare mentions that brake lights may sometimes fail to illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed after a battery replacement. Technicians should be aware that suspected brake light switch failure could also be linked to the battery power management system not being re-programmed when the battery was replaced. It advises that this should be investigated before a new brake light switch is fitted.

Cheers and Good Luck,

Steve
