restricted performance (amber engine display)

Hi All

My 1st venture on this site so fingers crossed you can help.

I have a 2004 S type 2.7 diesel and the restricted performance message and amber engine light has come on. This reduces the acceleration down to low revs and therefore could be dangerous. If i turn the ignition on and of a few times the message goes away but amber light stays on. It will then drive as normal for a while and then do it again.

Been to jag specialist who did a code check and he recons its one of the turbos and want to replace at a cost including labour

of £1500 !!!

I read that this isn't always necessary and it could be something cheap and easy to rectify. The car had been standing for a couple of months without use but just sailed through an MOT.

Hope you can help as i don't have £1500 !!!

Cheers

Steve

Steve,

Do you know someone who has a OBD11 code reader , a friendly local mechanic for instance ?

Have been having a look round and a lot of people with the same problem, and it has been the Master Air Flow Sensor that has been the problem.

Can happen for a number of reasons, sometimes a sensor fault confusing the engine ECU, sometime for faults with the electronic actuators on the turbos. Only a full diag will tell.

If the worst comes to the worst you can buy these code readers quite cheaply on eBay .

But whatever you do don't let the dealership get their hands on it !

Peter has a S type similar to yours and can maybe come up with some suggestions, he will be along shortly .

He also lives in the Midlands and can probably suggest somewhere local to you that can look into the problem .

I would be very surprised if it was one of the turbos, I hope not anyhow.

ATB,

Trevor

hi steve its in limp mode and sounds like the ecu what you can try is to reset the ecu this is done by disconnecting the {black lead from the battery and leaving off for 15/20 mins but before you do this make sure you have the radio code good luck trevor

Hi Steve, and Welcome to the club.

Trevor has given you some suggestions.

BV Electronics sell OBD Code readers --  simple one for around £20. [ I have one myself].

If it is a turbo charger, there are two dealers in Brummagem who are turbo specialists.  And their prices are less than £1500.

Try Supreme Auto Supplies [0121 246 1223] or GAP-Turbos [0121 459 8170].

If you have a friendly local garage that you normally use I would be inclined to asked him to plug it in for you.  The other question could be "Can you fit a turbo if I supply it?"

Supreme A S. seem quite good and have a look at their website.

Additionally it would be worth giving your car a Terraclean service   ---   about £130 ---  which is very beneficial for diesels.

Let us know how you  get on.

Regards,

Peter.

PS. I used to keep my caravan in Henley.

hi steve bet its the injectors sounds the same as the transits that used to give problems now and then. diagnostics would throw up egr valve. would replace that and sensors still be the same the problem was the injectors, a refurb one cost £150 for one, then the garages charge ect looking at £6-700 transits were also made by mr hendry ford and co. charlie
