Battery Problem

Hi,

I've just changed the battery in my 2004 S-Type. I thought it was going to be straightforward but it wasn't and I need help.

I installed a brand new battery and that went well. Then I switch on the ignition and two things happened - 1) the radio asked for a code, and 2) the low fuel light remained on and the display said 'apply parkbrake'.

1) I entered the radio code and was asked to 'please wait'. That was 5 hours ago!

2) When I apply the electronic handbrake, the low fuel light goes out and I get the total mileage readout!

The handbrake remains ON no matter what I do, so I can't drive the car at all!

I have tried disconnecting the battery and trying again, but nothing works, I get the same thing.

Any ideas? I'm really stuck.

(Btw, there were no problems like this before I changed the battery).

Hi

Just because a battery is brand new it would be wise to check its voltage of it, as the S- type is very particular about its voltages to work properly.

That is a good idea, Simon.

A member did buy a car with a new battery fitted by the dealer - He did put a photo on the site to demonstrate it and it was a tiny battery which would never power an S Type.

Hi Nick,

You appear to have done all the logical things.

The handbook indicates that if a new battery is connected it must be the same type as the original.

If you have the handbook for the s type Page 204 has a detailed procedure.

If you haven't, please lets me know and I will copy in the pages concerned. It may be that you will have to disconnect the battery and go through the procedure again.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi Peter,

Many thanks for your suggestion.

I'm pretty sure the new battery is the same type as the old one - 071    The guy in the parts shop was very confident.

Anyway, I'd be very grateful if you could post the relevant pages for me as I don't have a handbook for the car.

Thanks again,

Nick

Hi Nick,

I have just found the S Tye Handbook via Google,

Just tap in:    R S-TYPE OWNER'S HANDBOOK Jaguar

The full handbook is there and could be worth downloading, but a good read and a few notes would probably suffice.

If you can't  find it PM me with your address and I will copy and send the relevant pages    200 to 204 in my handbook,

Regards,

Peter.

Hi Peter,

Many thanks for that Peter. I didn't think the manual would be available online.

I've downloaded the manual and am reading it now.

I disconnected the battery last night so I could start afresh this morning. Hopefully it will allow me to free the parkbrake and put the radio code in again.

I'll let you know how I get on (fingers crossed).

All the best,

Nick

Hi Peter,

You are a star! I read the manual and followed the instructions and now have a fully working parkbrake!  I was misled by much of the advice on the internet about the way to reset the parkbrake. It was easy. With the ignition On, simply press the footbrake down and lift the parkbrake switch up, and it's done! All errors disappeared, except one small one :)

The radio is still saying 'Please Wait'. So I'll have to wait 30 minutes before I can put the code in again. I'll also need to reset the Window Anti-Trap, but that looks straightforward enough.

Once again, thanks for pointing me in the right direction Peter. Much appreciated.

Nick
