Power folding mirrors

Hi.

I've just bought an eight month old XF Luxury saloon and can't seem to get the door mirrors to fold by pressing the two switches simultaneously. Do I have a fault with the car or does this feature not come as standard on this model?

Hi John, and Welcome to the club.

Jaguar have a range of extra specifications.

It appears that the XF Luxury saloon 2.2D does not have powered folding mirrors unless specified at a cost of £430, whereas the XF premium luxury 3.0 D does have them as standard.

That information is available on 'WHAT CAR'.

There is however, another site  --  VinDecoderz  ----  which will tell you the exact specification of your car and the extra bits that were paid for by the first owner.

I found that my car had a proper spare wheel on a matching Alloy rim specified.

Let us know how it goes,

Regards,

Peter.

Thanks for the advice Peter. I tried the vindecoderz website and found that my car is supposed to have dual power/heated mirrors. I have found out that the "Mirror Pack" costing £430 (as you say) includes power folding amongst other additions such as auto dipping when reversing, auto powerfold/unfold, and a few more things.

I am amazed that a premium car does not have powerfolding mirrors as standard in 2015 when they have so many other gizmos included. I assume it is designed to force buyers of new cars into having add-ons that include more than they really want.

Still a great car though, and a good forum too.

Thanks again

Regards

John

Hi John,

It amazes me somewhat, too, although I remember the time when a heater, heated rear windows, wing mirrors, and dual speed windscreen wipers were all optional extras.

The starting handle did come as standard, though.

Peter.

  • 4 years later...

I have had same experience with my 2009 XF.

Last week on two differing instances damaged both my wing mirrors because

of non folding.

Repairs etc cost me £140 - could have saved this if I had known about a mirror

pack.

Would I need to go to Jaguar for such or an on-line source.  Any help could;d

save me money in the long run.

Hi Peter J,

Unfortunately I do not know the folding system on the XK,  --  my s type has a manual system operated electrically from in side the car.  For some reasoning an automatic system won't work on my car.

You won't need to go to Jaguar, as a good auto electrician could do the business.  There are also members of the club who are expert in the electrical systems on Jaguars.

Regards,

Peter.

Hello.

I am new to this site and to Jaguar ownership.

I just bought a 2013 LHD Jaguar XF-250 AWD 3.0 Litre.

Within days, the rear doors either failed to lock ( even when using the remote double lock feature) or, remained open with the front doors locked.

As of yesterday, both wing mirrors remain in the folded position.

The car is obviously undriveable and I am just waiting for the next failure.

Anybody had similar experiences and remedies ?

Thank you.

The first thing to do is to fully charge the battery overnight and see what happens then. These cars do not like low voltages as strange things can happen because of it.😁

Thank you for your advice. The car battery was tested 2 days ago during a technical inspection and was fine.

Does anyone else have experience of both rear doors remaining locked ( inside and out--manually and electronically) or, remaining open when the front doors are locked ?

The wing mirrors remain in the folded position.

Any advice/ remedies or should I just get rid of this car and consider it unfit for purpose ?

Thank you.

I had the problem of permenantlly locked rear doors (and non-functioning rear windows) after a flat battery whilst car unused in lockdown. I have posted another thread with details. Almost certainly cure is a simple reset (needs to be hooked-up to a garages computer). My battery is also fine (AGM batteries used in S/S XFs are able to be discharged to VERY low charge levels with no damage) but the multiple modules (computers) in these cars hate low voltage and it is very easy to let the battery discharge enough to corrupt the software. Sitting in the car with engine off you could be drawing as much as 10amps. Mine does not have powerfold mirrors but also these would likely cured by a reset. Apparently the car "carries" several copies of the full original software and it is a matter of running the diagnostics which replace corrupt files with original copies as needed.

If you do get it sorted and keep the car I suggest a CTek battery maintainer.  I have also  just fitted a CTek Battery-sense monitor which is very impressive. It connects to your phone by bluetooth so that you can remotely monitor battery condition to prevent issues. If your S/S is not working as it should I would hook up the battery to a CTek ASAP as this is a sure sign of low battery charge state.

Good luck

John

Dear John,

Thank you for your advice.

That sounds very sensible in that I am somewhat sceptical that a mechanical failure is at the origin of both the locking system on each door as well as both wing mirrors on each side.

The former perhaps, since I am told it is a not infrequent occurrence on JLR and the locking mechanism/actuator has to be repalced.

If I could take your advice a little further:

i) Before buying parts, is it possible to try and re-set ( doors and wing mirrors) without having to take the car to a JLR dealer or can a garage with a diagnostic system do the necessary ?

(I would like to help my local one which has been in business for a couple of years with a talented mechanic who has gone solo but used to work on "quality" cars and who is obviously finding business a bit "thin" these days. The local JLR dealer is flashy to the point of being unfrequentable).

ii) What could possibly cause a healthy battery to discharge to the point of "corrupting" the software ?

As far as I am aware, I close off everything, apart from the "Delay" function on the left hand stalk and which, as I understand it, allows the courtesy lights to be illuminated for an additional 30 seconds.

I will most certainly investigate the C-TEK option and see if I can have it delivered outside the UK.

Thank you again.

Kind regards,

Nicholas,

Hi Nicholas

CTEK are actually Swedish so I am sure they will be available wherever you live. If not there are other options just make sure that it has overcharge protection. Simple trickle chargers just carry on charging and will damage the battery if left connected too long.

My car has a warranty from the supplying garage which is actually a Volvo/Fiat dealer but with Jag dealers in the group. They rang the Jag dealer for advice and were talked through the process. As they are not a Jag dealer themselves I assume they have a generic "Diagnostic" computer rather than a specialised Jag one. They told me the Jag garage said it is a common problem and indicated it was a simple fix. They kept the car overnight to fully recharge the battery. I would take from this that a good independant with the correct kit should be able to do the job. It may be mechanical but I certainly think it sounds like a software (or possibly hardware) issue.

In my case, I am in Shielding in the UK with the pandemic so left the car alone for over a month. Big mistake. Voltage was down to 5v when RAC finally managed to get in (Battery is 18 months old and AGM). After doing lots of research it is not just a JLR problem but effects lots of modern high-end cars. The problem is that with all of the computers they use copious amounts of electricity and that is even when everything is off. If you think about it it is never "off" as it is always waiting to recieve an unlock command or detect an alarm trigger. I have seen a video of a car with the engine off drawing over 10A. If you repeatedly do several short journeys, maybe sit in the car listening to a track finishing on the radio, it is not hard to see how the voltage could drop when you start the car. The clue is that JLR use an auxilliary battery to look after the computers when the S/S is active. That protects the many modules from voltage drop problems. It is a little like a desktop PC. Even without dodgy voltage they sometimes freeze and need a reboot.

For the future I would at least monitor the Stop/Start and if it stops working as expected, take it for a long motorway run with minimal loads  (lights off, Aircon off, sound system off etc). Ideally get a CTEK maintainer and Battery sense like me 🙂

Hope that helps

Regards

John

Hi all, new member, just purchased a 2017 2.0L diesel Prestige, Automatic a few days ago.

I also have trouble folding the mirrors, despite what the manual says. I went to Vindecoderz and entered the VIN but it came back with "Jaguar Unknown 2017" and no other information.

Is there any other way I can find it what spec was originally bought and paid for on this car?

Thanks in advance

Good morning welcome to the Club.

If you enter your Vin Number into the Topix site and you'll get a summary of what's on your vehicle.

Regards Tom.

Your mirrors are probably staying folded because your door locks don’t work

I’ve been through it all with my drivers door which stopped the passenger door from locking and the mirrors from folding

In my case, I changed the motors in the door lock
