Powerfold mirrors

I have discovered that my S Type has powerfold mirrors :)

The problem is that the driver's side one clicks and the passenger side one moves but not very much.

Is this a simple problem or do I need to start sourcing replacements please?

In the first instance I would check power on each mirror to include from the fuse (I would suspect each would be fused individually) and the relay/relays.

If all is found to be OK then it is likely to be mechanical whereupon a strip down would be required however, the big if. Its unlikely that both mirrors would have encountered mechanical failure I would suggest it would be the same source of electrical failure along the line not forgetting the switch.

I have electrical motorised mirrors in my CLK and I by-passed the switches by installing a relay so that when the ignition if off, the mirrors fold to the closed position. You need a 12V relay with 2 No. Normally Open Contacts whereupon when you turn the ignition on power is applied to the relay closing the contacts and sending power to each mirror. When you turn the ignition off then power drops off the mirrors and they close.

I cannot understand why car manufacturers fit electrically operated mirrors whereupon you are required to fold the mirrors in before switching the ignition off, I always forgot which is why I decided on the above modification.

Thanks all :)

Both mirrors attempt to move so I think it is not an electrical problem. Apparently the covers can be removed and the inside sprayed with WD40.

Does that idea make sense please? How do the mirror covers come off please?

Never had an S - Type Paul so cannot help with removing the covers sorry except for the fact that I'm pretty sure you can download the vehicles workshop manual which may assist you.

Yes it would make sense to me with mechanical moving parts seizing up especially if the car is normally parked in the elements. Personally I would use WD40 to get them working but onc working I would use a silicone greece to keep them lubricated and protect them from moisture ingress.

Hi Paul  I had this problem mirrors not moving much. The cover comes off fairly easy just prise a thin blade or Stanley knife to remove  then a good squirt of wd40 while someone operates the folding switch does the trick.Hope that helps.

30 minutes with WD 40 and exercising the mirrors and the powerfold mechanisms now work perfectly :)

I imagine the previous owner(s) never used them as the corrosion was horrible. Fine now though. Some silicon grease sprayed on after getting them moving with WD 40 will ensure that they never fail again.

Thanks for the ideas chaps :)

Happy it all got sorted for you Paul, you may wish to consider my automatic open close relay idea if so then I would be happy to draw up the electrical circuit for the modification.

I have a 2006 "S" Type and on mine the mirror adjustment rocker switch needs to be in the centre position before the folding mirrors will operate. Mine also stick when it is cold or very dry, probably need to find a way to get at the pivot pin to lubricate it

Next to impossible to do so by disassembly. However, an aerosol spray of WD40 then light Oil between the stanchion and the mirror head itself whilst operation the switch gets the lubricant where it is required :)
