Recommenced Tyres for S Type

Hi Guy’s

I am looking to change all my tyres as the tyres on my S type 2.7D SE at the moment are FULLRUN and they are deathtraps and the road noise is unbearable. The type sizes I have at present are as follows

Front: 235 / 50 ZR R18 101w XL. Rear: 255 / 45 Z R18 103w XL

I have been searching online but thought I would ask my fellow S Tyre owners for your opinion and advice

Hi Dave,

The tyre size  for 18" wheels should be on the s type 2.7D   245/40R/18/97Y.  As given by Jaguar.

There was a recent try survey and the two makes that came out on top were Goodyear Eagle XL and Vredestein.

I hav just replaced my front tyres with Goodyear and am surprised at how quiet they are.

Thank you for that Peter, I will go with your recommendation, it's alway's best to ask the guy's in the know, and other owners ;) . By the way, I tried out that DPF cleaner that you recommended, took the Cat out for a 100 mile round trip on the motorway as well and she is running sweet, thank you for your advice on that as well.

Regards

Dave

I bet they did look good together, must admit I am enjoying my S Type and learning about it all the time, found all the gadgets but realised many of them are just that and switched them off again. I have only had her 4 months and she is in mint condition and I intend on keeping her that way. Surprised that she often gets a second glance as we drive down the road considering the price however I think they are very much a retro car that you either like or dislike. I too always run on premium as suggested by the dealer I bought her from. One thing Peter, I was searching for Goodyear Eagle XL 245 40 R18's on the National Tyre Centre website to gauge prices and they were not showing up in that size ?.

Hi Dave,

Try the Halfords site. Just look for "Tyres" put in you reg number and it will come up with the right tyre for your car.

The exact tyre I went for is:- Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 FP XL 245/40 R18 97 Y.

I get a good deal at Halfords locally as they will always give a lower price than the other local tyre companies   --  we have a Kwik Fit, and Formula 1 and a couple of other tyre companies not far away. I paid £128 a ttre.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi Dave,

Goodyear tyres are now made in Germany and the Euro exchange rate favours the £ at the moment makes them quite cheap. When I got my tyres the euro was 1.29 to the £ and now is 1.38.  A good bargain.

Let us know how good you think they are.

Peter.

Hi Peter. Yes, I was very impressed and pleased to get the Burr Walnut although the maple looks lovely as well. I turned into a bit of a Jag chaser for a couple of months, due to a busy work schedule I could only view cars at the weekend, I missed out on a few and one of them had the Burr Walnut dash & trim, I drove 80 miles on a Saturday (by appointment) to view it to be told it had been sold two days before, did not even have the courtesy to phone me . I ended up contacting an old friend who is a salesman at a local Jaguar dealership and he gave me the heads up on my one as soon as it came in as a trade in.

  • 1 month later...

I find this subject very confusing. My S Type 2.7 Diesel Sport came with Pirelli P Zero which seemed OK but were quite noisy. I then had Michelin Pilot Super Sport which were great for handling but not much quieter and also I took a hit of 10% on fuel consumption. Next I went for Michelin Pilot Sport 3 (recommended by Michelin for S Type) and these were a bit of a disappointment. (I have had Michelins on BMWs for years and they have always delivered a perfect balance of ride, handling and noise.) The PS3s now need replacing and as the Michelins have been a bit of a disappointment I asked the Jaguar agent who is recommending Pirelli Cinturato P7 Jaguar fitment. I am having these fitted tomorrow so will update on how they perform. I am a Michelin bigot so it will be interesting. They only last about 20,000 miles so not too long to wait if they are a mistake.

I went with Peters suggestion and got Goodyear Eagle XL's. I just wanted to give it a few weeks before I posted my opinion on these tyres. Well I have covered approx. 1500 miles on these tyres now included a 700 round trip to northern Holland and must say I am very impressed indeed. OK in all fairness I was replacing FULLRUN tyres which by reviews are basically like driving on balloons full of stone but personally I was amazed with the difference in road noise from the moment a pulled out of the tyre centre. Really glad I took Peters advise, wish you all the best with your choice of tyre Simon and hope it works out for you, keep us all posted on the tyres performance as any info added by fellow owners is invaluable. I notice you have your cup holder exposed. Slide you're armrest forward.

Tip, pull out the cup holder bit and you have a very useful felt lined box hidden underneath!!

I wish I could lift up the centre armrest. The handle no longer retracts the catches so the lid will not open. I used to be able to give it a good pull and it would open but not any more!

Thanks Dave, will let you know. Which model S Type do you have and which size of tyre? Mine are the low profile 18" alloys for the diesel sport. I do play with the idea of putting on the SE wheels  with the fatter tyres if they would fit for winter tyre use.

2.7D SE Simon, Sure I had 245/40R/18/97Y all round, again suggested by Peter. Luckily I am more than happy with the performance, handling, and greatly reduced road noise but as I said, I only have the devil tyres that were on the car when I bought it to compare them with ;)
