Unable to open the boot

Hi everyone..... I am new to the site and need some help.

I have owned my x type for a few weeks now and it's great, BUT I have just got home from the supermarket and the boot won't open.

When I press the fob or the boot lid button I can hear the mechanism working faintly but it just won't open the boot.

I cannot get in via the back seats..... Please can anyone help. The boot is full of food and I'm at my wits end trying to get it open.

I do not know the X Type boot lid, but the S type has a key entry system that is very useful in such circumstance

But assuming you have a saloon, look under the chrome strip with the Jaguar name on and you will see a key slot, to the left which will open the boot.  If the x type is the same as the s type you will get in.

Obviously a panic moment over a sticking lock mechanism or jammed with shopping bags etc however, Peter have given the explanation

Hi Peter... Thanks for your reply...... The set up on the x type is different from the S type in that there is no keyhole anywhere on the boot lid. I have confirmed this with other owners.

Ken this is not something as inane as a panic moment over a jammed bootlid caused by a bag of shopping.

I cannot get into the boot for the spare or tools or the shopping. I was hoping to get consuctive help from members who have experience with this model.

I have checked on the net, one suggestion is to break in via the rear light cluster and unlock the rear seats, then renew the light cluster. I was hoping for a less destructive method.

Hi Stephen, I was under the impression that there would have at least been a key entry for such emergencies, my XKR has a boot key which is concealed within the Jaguar icon, I assumed the X Type not having owned or been involved with the model would have such an emergency entry whether it be by a concealed key lock or a opening lever within the car. If I sounded in any way rude to you then it was not mant to be and my apologies if it sounded so

Hi Ken........ No problem and no hard feelings...... It's just that I find it so frustrating that Jaguar x types have this ridiculous design.

To get into a locked boot when the electric lock release is faulty you have to drop the rear seats like in other cars. BUT the problem is that the seat release levers are in the !Removed! boot.

I have been advised by others that the only way In is to break out the rear light cluster and release the rear seat.

SURELY there is a better way than that. Jaguar can't have been that stupid...... Or could they.

I'm going to the jag main dealer tomorrow to see if they can help me.

Did you stop the car using the hand brake instead of the foot brake. I know daft question but it does stop you opening the boot from the key fob or the button. The other thing is the little flap on the ignition barrel has stuck open so thinks the key is still in the ignition. Put something on the carpet under the ignition and spray it with wd40. It should free the flap off and the boot will work again.

Hi Ian.... Thanks for your response and thanks to all those that have replied to my plea for help.

In desperation I went to my local Jag main dealer

( Hatfields on Sefton St Liverpool). They said they could get into the boot without causing damage, but couldn't book me in until Friday. But give them credit they referred me to a small jag specialist garage in north Liverpool. I went straight there. They were really helpful. left the car with them for an hour while I scoffed a fry up in a local cafe. They got on by dismantling the rear seats somehow. They traced the fault to a broken wire in the harness where it leaves the body and enters the boot lid (it's covered by plastic corrugated flexible tube). Job done £40

unfortunately there is no easy solution to this nagging problem.. I'm afraid it's a case of stripping the back seat out and only then will you be able to access a square shaped  hole in the plate. Twisting a long handled flat bladed screwdriver and hey presto the boot lock releases. Then its a case of linking a wire to the eye hook at the bottom of the unit. while you await a replacement solenoid to arrive from e bay.

Hopefully the lights issue on the number plate should remedy itself when the part is fitted .keep you posted!

I think if had ones of these you could easily remove the trim on the boot lid to expose the boot release solenoid

you could tie some nylon type fishing line, to the solenoid arm, which will still allow free movement, then go toward the boot hinge that pulls the boot open solenoid, then down the boot hinge cover and down the side of the seat.

so if you get stuck out, you can open the rear door and pull the line at the side of the seat you pulled in

most cars that had cable pull boot had this as standard for emergencies

Just for anyone's future reference on this topic, I just had the exact same issue with my x type. I tried the ignition barrel flap trick and it worked first time. Just flapped the key in and out a couple times, and when I went to start the engine all the locking mechanisms in the doors clicked and hey presto the boot was able to open again

Mine boot stuck this morning as suggested I must of used the handbrake to stop before turning engine off instead off foot brake , started engine moved car and used  foot brake then handbrake , all working now cheers

Welcome to the club, John.

There is really no substitute for the mechanical lock.  Having a note that could be kept in the owners manual can be very useful.

The s type has a key entry neatly place next to the numberplate light!  I have had to use it several times when the battery was disconnected and I was daft enough to close the boot!

If you have a problem with the boot not opening on a xtype and still hear the mechanism. It's the wire from near side going into boot lid with rubber grommet it's the black wire is broken easy fix. Just need auto wire from halfords. Run wire through and connect both ends

Hi. I hade a problem with boot locked because electric problem, and after reading lot's of forums I decided to drill a hole abort 2cm wide after remowing numberplate, 10cm or 3 inches below U in Jaguar then it's possible to use a screwdriver to reach The mechanical part and open boot. I used a inspektion camera (Cost around 30 pounds)

Thanks for the information.  My girlfriend has just bought a 2005/6 X Type and I'm trying to get it onto the Spanish register. The spare wheel well contains one of the official Jag plates and without that ? Well, Brexit hasn't helped for following the letter of the Spanish law. Oh yes, the front door will not unlock from the outside as well. One has to clamber into the rear and then squirm to the front lever to release it. Good fun, init?

I spent about ten years campaigning for the UK to join Europe and was somewhat annoyed when the worst PM since Lord North had not the courage to tell people like Farage/Johnson/Cummings etc that Brexit was a bad thing.

At least, your thoughts will be concerning the Spanish government and fixing a Jaguar.

This has just happened in my x type 56 plate. My neighbour who has his own garage had a look and got a metre length of cable from an old lamp, "took the blue cable but either that or the brown would do" anyway he took one of the reg plate light covers off and removed the Bulb and stuck one end of the cable ( stripped of course) into the Bulb socket and dropped the other end of the cable on to the ground, he pushed the boot release button under the "Jaguar strip sign and the boot opened. The cable in the boot panel has either disconnected or broken and control was not earthed causing malfunction. Wire will be repaired tomorrow. Hope this helps.

Had a problem with my x type 08. The boot could not be opened. 

The only solution was to remove the rear seat. To do this pull the bottom seat cushio, you can do this by pulling hard on front of the cushion about 300mm from the door on each side. The clips are quite difficult you may need o big screw driver to use as a leaver. Once the bottom cushion has been removed, the back cushions can be removed by removing the 6 tork bolts holding them to the floor. When this is done lift the small cushion as far as possible, the connecting pin will fall out. At this point you will be able to squeeze into the boot and release the securing bracket, enabling the back cushions to be removed, then you will be able to remove the remaining cushion. 

Once in the boot remove the plastic lock cover by removing the two plastic pop screws at the top   you my need to drill the heads off. Once you have exposed the lock mechanism you will see a hole in the lock with a leaver, use a  screwdriver to move the leaver, this release the boot and it will open. 

With our car we found the wiring in the rubber sleave between the body and the boot lid had broken. We replaced the wiring through the sleave putting joints through the boot lid and the body at the body end. 

Took some time but with minimal cost
