Which Jag to buy?

Hi Guys,

 

I've always been a fan of Jaguars and am now finally able to buy one!

I want to get an x-type (2007+) and looking for some advice about what type to get.

I need to be able to get 35+ mpg around town, I'm not really sure what mpg the petrol model gets though.

 

Buy I know there's the 2.0l D, 2.2l D, and the 2.5 V6 P - which one is the best (very subjective I know).

Also, when going to view what checks should I do before buying, and any common faults?

I think if you want 35mpg round town the diesels are your only option. My 2.1 V6 petrol does just 20mpg round town, and around 35mpg on a motorway run and I think the other V6's are about the same. I think next time I'll look for a Sovereign spec 3.0 petrol - insurance, road tax and MPG aren't much different to the 2.1.

 

Personally I prefer the non-sport specs so if you go for the more traditional SE trim you get leather, wood, and quite a lot of kit. Mine rides well on standard 17" wheels, not sure about the bigger wheels and lower profile tyres.

 

Whatever you go for get the best history and condition you can. Mines an 05, 70k miles with FSH and I've not had any issues in the 9 months I've had it.

I used to have an x type 2.5 V6 Petrol  SE and the maximum I ever got from it around town was around 24mpg and 35 on a long run.

 

My son has just bought an X Type Sport 2.0D  Estate on a 06 plate.  I researched the engines and in my opinion the best engine to give good economy around town was the 2.0 litre diesel and also very good on long journeys.

 

I also think that 17 inch wheels give the most comfortable ride, and if you can get the SE with as many bells and whistles on you will get a good car.

Hi was I had a 2.5 petrol got about 32 /35 mpg on a run ,may mate had the same x type but the 2.2 diesel he was getting a much better fuel economy then me, also mine was a automatic, his was a manual, the 2.2 diesel is a very good engine , only problem with the manual gearbox is that the clutch went, and it is fitted with a duel mas flywheel, cost him over £1200 for a new clutch . Ochi !.

I think a diesel is the way to go, I definitely want an automatic, do they do a auto in the 2l model?

I've been keeping an eye out but I'm struggling to find one that I like though.

Hi Wasi,

 

I don't think that the 2.0 litre diesel comes in an auto version.  The 2.2 litre diesel does have an auto version.

Hi, check Transmition control module , cooling expansion tank and water pump, this parts often give problems to Russian Jaguar x-type owner's.

Hello! I have the 2.2D X-Type and it is incredible on fuel. I get about 40 - 50mpg, that is around town and occasional motorway. Not to mention it has 150BHP and 270 lbs/ft of torque! Pulls like a train but with the fuel economy to make it affordable to floor it.

 

Best car i have owned and even my dad, who is a very experienced Jag owner, says it was a good buy which is saying something as he normally tells me to scrap the cars i go for xD! If your going to get one then go for the Sport, has nicer detailing to give it that real Jag feel.

I've owned a 200Ltr D SE on a 54 plate for seven years. It has now done 202,250 miles and will still return 61.5 mpg at 55mph (sat nav speed) at night on the motorway. If I follow a truck, I can get nearly 70 mpg. The car will also return mid 40 mpg if I travel at the 'legal' limits and involve town driving.

I've just bought a 2.2 D Sovereign at 40,000 miles just in case the 2 Ltr dies on me. (I need total reliability) The Sovereign does about 5 mpg less over long distances and is a little annoying because just where you will do the best mpg, it wants to change between 5th and 6th gear.  I forgive it because it is such a brilliant car. It is now in dry storage waiting for the 2 Ltr to die. I'm hoping it won't at least for another 50,000 miles.

I can't sing the praises of the 2 Ltr D Jag loud enough, even if a Green Flag man filled me with doubt when a jubilee clip broke on a turbo pipe and left me stranded a long way from home. (He didn't have a good word to say about Jags). The fuel consumption is miserly. I drive the way I do because I get paid a 'mileage rate'. Non Jaguar people just don't get it. They think all Jaguars are gas guzzlers.  Their ignorance gives us more to choose from.

Well said Kevinfx22. Driving style does play a big part in the fuel economy but either way the MPG is great in these cars and you couldn't get better car for your money. I would recommend them to anyone.

Hey. If your still looking, I have a 2.2 diesel manual sport. 58 reg so full width chrome on the boot, spoiler too. driving on 18" Jaguar alloys in the best colour of blue. 35-60mpg if you can stick to 56mph on cruise control. I highly recomend the car.
