S type auto gearbox problem.

Hi all I am new to the forum.

I have a S Type 2.5 auto 2005, 100,000 miles and have a slight auto gearbox problem!

I get a jerky change every now and again between 2nd and 3rd, it only happens in slow traffic. I get the gerbox error message come up if it dose it more than 3-4 times and turning the car on and off seems to get rid of it.

I did read up about it and it was suggested a fluid/filter change may cure it and I have done this but unfortunatly it has not.

Is there anything else I can try, suggestions please!

Welcome to the Club, Nick.

The Auto gearbox is supposed to be sealed for life, but many members have had a gearbox service ---  fluid and filter change, and it has benefitted the car immensely.

There are good transmission experts all over the UK and the ZF gearbox is one of the most common automatic gearboxes in the country, and probably Europe.

If you were tp do the job yourself, it would probably cost less than £200.

My S type has done 65k miles and I will be having that job done in 18 months.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi Peter

I have had the fluid and filter changed and it still has the problem, although it is not quite as bad just a slight jump as if you droped a clutch too quickly and no gearbox error message, ive only done a few miles round the houses since it was done so am hoping as the new fluid makes it way round everything it improves!

You say the gerbox is one fitted to many makes of car?

Hi Nick,

The ZF gearbox in its various forms is to be found in the BMW, Maserati, Ferrari, Aston Martin Lotus, Alfa Romeo, and Ford, as well as Jaguar.

It is also to be found in many other models plus vans, trucks and just about everything on wheels.  I think that they only time it wasn't fitted on European Cars other than German ones was in between 1939 and 1945.

It is being rumoured locally that they are opening an assembly plant in Sutton Coldfield, which will be handing for the Jaguar Factories.

regards,

Peter.

Nick

I have read many posts about problems of various types, a lot of responses do suggest a possible Battery fault causes all sorts of weird and wonderful things, perhaps the guys in the forum will comment on whether this could be a possibility, for your particular problem.

OBD Code P0782refers to

This P0782 code indicates that the 2-3 shift valve in the valve body is locked in the direction of the spring compression. The Transmission Control Module (TCM) controls the gearshifts by turning the shift solenoid valves "ON/OFF" and switching Oil pressure to the valves in the valve body. The TCM calculates the "actual" transmission gear by comparing the signals from the input speed sensor and the output speed sensor. Hope this helps solve your problem

I have had a 2.7 Diesel S Type Automatic from new, and until recently it was a dream, although my deep un-happiness with the main dealer meant that I have used a local workshop for the past few years.  Now done 108,000 miles.

Recently  a number of snags have occurred, including the parkbrake problems with the unit failing either off OR on! A couple of weeks ago the parkbrake failed off but as the car was still driveable I left it for a few days - not using the car very much.  However, when returning home one evening both the ABS warning and gearbox warnings came on and the car went from driving like a cat to being a complete dog!  Like being in 3rd gear all the time, with very bad "jerks" as you selected reverse or drive.  I checked the internet and found lots of worrying acounts of people who had suffered similar problems and had replaced transmissions at huge cost.  However, I also noted that some people used "scanners" to diagnose and eliminate faults.  I obtained a scanner for about £100 (iCarsoft i930).  This identified a problem with an ABS sensor  which I have replaced.  This has solved the ABS and gearbox problem.  It has also cured a number of little niggles such as the front parking sensors, and identified the specific problem withe the rear ones (a failed sensor).  However, the parking prake remains an issue and if anyone has a permanent cure for this very intermittent faultit would be much appreciated.

Cannot specifially recommend that scanner I bought as I have since seen another for only £28, but this one does nearly all the Jaguar range as land Rover also.  I am hoping that this scanner has actually saved me from having to get a new gearbox.........

Hi Nick and welcome to the club.

Sorry to hear about your problems and hopefully the majority are now fixed - thanks for sharing.

Many members have had their gearbox Oil changed at circa 70k miles which they have said improves the gearbox performance  ---  gets rid of the ZF lurch - even though the gearbox is supposed to be for life.

The park brake can be a nuisance and I have had a few issues with the message "Parkbrake Fault" which is cured by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes and then reconnecting.

I never use a main dealer having used a mobile mechanic for the last 14 years.  At the last service I asked him to check out the park brake and he said that there was nothing wrong and it looked OK  --   he also gave the cable a lubricant spray.  I have not had the message since.

Morgana, my S Type, will be taking me to Lyme Regis next month so give me a hoot!

Regards,

Peter.

Hi All

First time poster here.

My father has a much loved S-type, 2005 build, purchased 2007. 2.5ltr Auto

About two years ago (c50k miles) on a hot summer drive in southern England  it flashed up 'gearbox fault' when crawling through start stop traffic, and trying to change gears at low speed. With the error message up, the car could not change gear. This problem has persisted intermittently ever since. Vehicle now at 57k. Specialist mechanic recently changed Oil and filter in order to fix the problem. After a couple of hundred miles, it recurred, again while crawling in start/stop traffic. In all cases, turning the engine off for about 10-20 second seems to clear the fault. For a while before the problem emerged, changes were sometimes a bit jolty in low gears changes, they still are a bit juddery at times (but equally a few moments later at the next set of traffic lights, can be as smooth as anything.

The mechanic said if Oil change does not work, a new gearbox is needed.

I am not fully convinced the problem is mechanical - turning the engine off and back on again seems to sort the error out, it only happens at slow stop/start conditions and in hot or cold temperatures.

What other issues, short of a mechanical fault, could be the problem here? And are there any gearbox expert mechanics in the London area. My father seems to think one of the error codes was P1 or something similar (this is probably not very helpful).

Thanks

Mike

HI

The gearboxes are rebuild able and repairable

first step would be get codes read with Jaguar  ids/sdd software to see what fault is and go from there

could be a sticky solenoid in the gearbox to something as simple as a abs sensor, or even a air leak on the engine

cheers

Joe

I have a 2004 2.5 SE with 52k on the clock, and also have this issue in similar driving conditions, usually followed by a MIL after the third or fourth engine re-cycle - it happened 3 times to me today. Once I clear the MIL the gearbox behaves for a week or two, then it starts all over again. I've had opinions, each from different experienced sources, ranging from 'change the oil' (done), 'it's a sticky solenoid', 'the wiring gets too hot' to 'replace the gearbox'.

I'm going to buy myself an iCarSoft LR v.2.0 soon, and if necessary I'll be visiting these guys in Twickenham: http://www.rimsengineering.co.uk/

I have a 2001 3.0 auto and just had the rear calipers off as ceased (due to lack of use being an auto) and new pads put in but now the gearbox fault comes up intermittently... I read on here that an ABS sensor can cause this, could this of been disturbed during the work? took it to a specialist gearbox place where my mate works and after a guy took it for a spin he said basically the gearbox is knackered but I keep reading that it could be some easy fix ..... the car only cost me £800 so not gonna spend huge amounts, but gutted as I just had the MOT done at £300 ffs

Hi Tim, and welcome to the club.

I sometimes get both the ABS and the gearbox fault come up intermittently, which annoyed me somewhat as all seemed well.

The ABS issue was basically an old reference, and the message was removed and only comes back if the battery is low on power.

The "Gearbox fault" was a slightly different matter.  I was advised to use the manual gear control [the J gate] when going downhill as it provided some drag and slowed the car down to stop it exceeding speed limit.  But appears that I was using it too much and the gearbox did not like it and gave me an amber warning and "restricted performance". My mobile mechanic, who knows everything about cars, connected his diagnostic system and found that the problem appeared to be that when using the third gear the gearbox expected to then go into 4th gear and then 5th rather than directly  into auto. Cheap fix!

But you gear box is an older one than mine and an Oil change could be useful, and failing that there are several gearbox experts who could advise.

Let us know how you get on.

Regards

Peter.

hi

you need to get it plugged in, it will tell you the fault

could be something as simple as a abs sensor, or a bad connection on one

if its a 2001, it will be the ford 5 speed gearbox and these are very reliable

ideally you want it plugged into Jaguar ids/sdd, generic code readers only read engine codes and wont talk to gearbox or abs modules

cheers

Joe

I have a 2005 Petrol S Type 2.5 Auto with 41k. Drives perfectly, but after having a flat battery which I disconnected to charge I started to come up with a Intermittent warning light Gearbox Fault and a small jolt between gear changes. My garage says it’s a fault between 1 & 2 and 3 & 4 Solenoid sticking after doing a diagnostic check.
any advice.

Thanks Mike

I have a 2000 Jaguar s-type 3.0 with 79,900 miles and I recently encountered the gearbox fault light coming on, when I plugged in the code reader it said solenoid c and d faulted. The check engine light has come on as well but it shows no other codes thrown. It shifts fine and only has a slight lack in power from 1st to 2nd gear upon acceleration but still beats most cars off the line at the light. Not sure what I should do to get rid of the lights on the dash, any suggestions?
