Coolant Leak

Hi guys,

Sorry to bother you on Xmas day but any help would be appreciated.

I overheated yesterday and when I checked, I noticed that the coolant tank was completely empty. I filled it to the MAX and left it overnight.

When I checked this morning it had drained quite a lot. I have attached a photo.

It is a 56 plate diesel so could this just be an age related problem (worn hose etc) or could this be more serious?

I am lucky enough to live in Doncaster and I have seen some recommendations previously for a jag specialist here, so I will take it to see him when he is open again.

Thanks for any help.

Merry Christmas

Hi Dean---Sorry to hear of your problem just on Christmas

First thing is to check for any leaks on Radiator or pipes on to floor .???

if theres no leaking it must be internal--Dip the Oil to see if it has gone above

the full mark????

start the car if it misses or will not run smooth .????

These checks need doing to see where the water has gone .???

with luck it will just be a leak.

Best of luck .

Frank

Thanks for fast reply. I will check this in the morning.

Have you had any experience with coolant leak repair fluids like this?

Dean, get the car up to operating temperature to check for leaks, if its an hose you should see a fine spray coming from it or anywhere else its leaking to give you an indication. If its an head gasket leak the Oil or the water will look creamy in colour

Hi Dean. Hope this is of some help.

My diesel X type has a coolant leak also. Nothing drastic but it does go down overtime. I found it to be the thermostat housing. Noticed water dripping from the gasket/seal. I will eventually sort it. Might be a good place to check in case this is a common X Type fault.

  • 5 years later...

I had same coolant problem on my x type 2.0 diesel 56 plate. It was a rubber o ring.

I took off air filter and the bracket below that it mounts on.

Under that you'll see the water pump, on left hand side of the pump about 1" from the block is a plastic connector held on by an 8mm bolt.

I undid the bolt and removed the plastic connector, the o ring around the plastic connector was broken. It seems to be some kind of sub thermostat with a spring loaded valve. Part number XS7Q 6L635-AE

Hope that helps someone.

Mick
