Welcome to the club, John.

John [Jingles] - and a welcome to you also.

It does sound like burning off soot.  Wynns have a product called "Diesel EGR Cleaner which come in a spray canister. You have to get your engine running at normal temperature, take out your air filter, run the engine at about 1200 rpm --  you might need someone else to do that -- and spray the whole canister into the air intake. I use in on my s type and it works.  A good blast on the motorway always works if it is the EGR valve.

I use Shell V power  for my 2.7 diesel S Type and find that I get better performance as well as better mpg.

Regards,

Peter.

Just another thought, John.  I have just has a visit from my son who has a 2.0 D X type.  He says the when he accelerates hard he get some dark grey/black smoke from his exhaust. which sounds like some unburnt Oil being burnt off. His car still goes pretty well

As your cars has been stopped overnight it is possible that the same thing has happened.

You will need either an additive, or better still give your car a Terracean service. For about £120 it will give your fuel system a thorough clean.  Try googling Terrclean and you will find a good description and also a local technician who can do it.

Let us know how it goes.

Peter.

Welcome to the Club, Kenny.

Predictive text seems to be a robot interfering with a human being ---  or possibly vice versa.

I first saw Terracleand on the TV just after I bought my 2.7D S type.  It seems like a good process, and when a member local to me bought a 2.0 litre Diesel X type and found that it wouldn't start when it was hot -- which he found a bit of a nuisance -- he had taken it round to a well respected local Jaguar dealer who diagnosed that both the glow plugs and injectors needed replacing at a cost of £1200, he asked me if there was an alternative.  We talked about terraclean, and two days lated he told me that he had just spent about £110 to have it done  -----  and the car was now running perfectly.

There nothing wrong with my s type, but I thought that I would try it out to see if it improved what I thought was rather a good engine. I was getting around 40 mpg on a long run and around 28 mpg round the city.

A few days after I had it done I went to a funeral in Sheffield about 90 miles away, half dual carriageway and half on the M1 which was limed to 50 mph because of roadworks.  For that half of the journey got 50.3 mpg!  A different route using more motorway but less restrictions one I was able to put my foot down a bit over half of the 100 miles return trip the result for the round trip was 46.1 mpg.  The car was also much more responsive.

I was also advised to us premium fuel, which I have done ever since. Two weeks ago I drove up the Lake District - 215 miles and got 46.7 mpg on the way up and on the way back on a Bank Holiday Monday with holdups, I got 45.6 mpg.

This is the third diesel I have had, the first two were both Rovers, the 418 Peugeot engined diesel and the 420 Rover diesel, bot of which returned on average over very big mileages around 38 mpg. My much bigger and heavier S type Jaguar with the 2.7 diesel gives me about 560 miles on a full tank -- over 40 mpg.

I have no connection with the Terraclean service, but just tell people my experience,

Regards,

Peter.
