Old Mans car? Fact? or Fiction?

Right, here we go.

Will try and make this brief, when I mentioned to one of my contractors (last year) I have just bought a Jaguar (because I'm proud to be), the response was, "Old mans" car! (What is classed as old? I don't know, but the results will speak for themselves) this has been bugging me since.

What is it with this View?

Anyhow I'm wondering what is the average age of a Jaguar owner when they 'FIRST' become an owner. Results are of course limited to members of the JOC only. So I repeat when you FIRST became an owner, not your current age.

Let's kick this off, I was 53.

i will look at responses over a period of time and do the maths.

Did your contractor know you had a S-Type, or just any Jaguar? Clarkson likes to take the p**s of Jag owners so perhaps he's been listening to that idiot!

I briefly had a shed of an XJ6 when I was in my late 20's, and it's taken 20 years to renew my Jag ownership. At 47 I suspect I'm at the younger end of the age group, plenty of similar posts on other forums, but they seem mainly US based:

age of owners

average age

younger jag owners

Cheers :)

Wow! Thanks guys already, Russ I'm putting you in the 20's bracket, and 'He' was a 'She' by the way, not of course that has any baring on the comment or outcome :whistling1:

I may have mentioned once or thirty times I owned an S Type! It's become a bit of a joke at work, maybe I should start sacking people (kidding of course) the less said about clarkson perhaps the better. I didn't know about similar topics in the USA, but of course welcome replies from our off shore friends.

I was a mere youngster when I first saw the first Jaguar I wanted - a Mark 1 being restored. I was 77 when I bought my first, a rather nice X Type which was stolen the day after my 79th birthday.

SWMBO said that I should turn a disaster into an opportunity, and bought me a beautiful S Type [Morgana the Witch].

Great  Cars and the Owners Club  Members are great people.

Pictures of SWMBO and Morgana.

Peter.

Bought my first jag at 19, a beautiful 1967 red S1 coupe , wire wheels 8 track the works paid £1900  back in 69 from Blue circle garage in Cheadle hulme and to the present day have owned 16 of this gorgeous  marque. My love affair with these cars has far outlasted my 4 marriages and will continue to do so

I was 40 when I bought my first Jag, a brand new Xtype 2.0d sport estate in metallic black with Ivory leather, I'm now 52 and on my second one.

I was bitten by Jaguar at the tender age of 5 believe it or not, some very good friends of my parents bought a new E type convertible in black with black interior, my Dads friend took my dad and I for a spin, I was sitting on the folded roof with dad holding onto my legs as we sped through the town on a very hot day (those were the days!!) that memory has stayed with me ever since and I promised myself I would own one one day. The reason it took so long to get one was darn companies forcing me to drive boring German company cars !! Still Im on my second one now so alls well :)))

I was 25 when i purchased  a  4.2 Daimler Sovereign in Squadron Blue with a Navy Blue vinyl roof. Just loved that car. Then a long gap until last year when i purchased a 56 plate S-Type 2.7 V6 D again in Blue but alas no vinyl roof. Love this one even more (even with the parkbrake fault)

I'm 45 and bought my first Jag (S-Type V6 diesel) a few months ago.  Frankly, I'm glad it has the rep as an old man's car as it means you can pick them up for a song!  Mine is a 55 plate with only 63K on the clock.  All the whistles and bells (including the Sat Nav console) and it only cost me £5k!  The equivalent BMW or Audi would have cost me twice that or I'd have had to settle for one that had been around the galaxy and back.

The other thing is, with generally older previous owners, they are more likely to have been looked after.

Old man’s car?

What about an old woman’s car? I remember several small cars that were favoured by women but so many seem to have become bulbous and ugly. The cars that is!

Anyway, you’ll all have been aware (BBC News) that seventy is now regarded as the new fifty. Given that revelation I’m pleased to admit that I bought my first Jaguar three years before I turned ... er ... fifty!

Steve, I bet Jaguar have precise details of their customers’ demographic, motor industry marketing departments probably know more about us than we do ourselves.

Very best,

Jim
