Hi Everyone

I am desperate for some help I have always liked Jags and love my X Type it took 4 years of persuasion before my husband would agree to buying the 2.0L X Type as he thinks its not a real Jag and he much prefers the S Type. For me the lines of the X Type are lovely and are reminiscent of the older Jags. Any how I digress, I really need some help trying to figure out what might my engine problems be.

It start with the Glow Plug light flashing on my dash and the fault was diagnosed as the turbo actuator which we have now had changed. However when driving down the road the car start to become very lumpy after taking advise I had the EGR Valve changed but still the problem is there one minuet fine the next very sick indeed.

As you can imagine the car is turning into a bit of a money pit right now can anyone out there help me.......

Hi Lisa, and welcome to the club.

I am no mechanical expert but at a guess it sounds like a fuel problem

I had my S Type 2.7 Diesel Terracleaned as a preventative move and it certainly cleaned out the engine and improved the performance. I would recommend that your car is given that treatment.

And to answer your digression, the X Type IS a real Jaguar.             True, it has some Ford technology, but so do other cars including the Aston Martin, Morgans and Landrovers.  Automotive practice has developed over the years and other than the body shell most Car Manufacturers use parts from many suppliers, most of them in the Midlands.  Rolls Royce now has a BMW engine, and prior to that from 1946 it had a Buick engine which served it well till the BMW  "takeover"

Regards,

Peter.

Hi Peter

Thank you for your support on the X type I have been saying that for ages. I suppose you are either an S Type person or an X Type with no compromise.

I will look into using a treatment as you suggest. Thank you for your help

Hi Jim

My car is coming up to 100,000 miles I have it services on a regular basis however I am unable to tell if the fuel filter as been changed. I have a superb Mercedes mechanic who works on my car although he changes most service items not sure if that has been done. My mechanic has put the car on a diagnostic code reader and since the Actuator change all error codes have seemed to have cleared.

This not the first time that the fuel filter has been mentioned so even if it is not the problem it would worth having it changed anyway to be on the safe side and with any look it would solve my problem at the same time :). I have heard that it needs to be a certain type is that correct and if so do you know which one it should be?

Thanks

p.s. I can't let the X Type sceptics win after all.........

Hi Lisa,

My younger son has an x type 2.0 litre Diesel and while researching the engine [Ford Duratorq] I found one owner who had an X Type 2.0 diesel with just over 200k on the clock.

I used to have a rather splendid X Type 2.5 AWD which I would still have but for two scroats who carjacked me on my driveway. Pleased to say they were part of a 3 man gang who had been active in Birmingham for several years and who are now residing in one of HRH's prisons serving 8 years terms.

My wife said "Turn a disaster into an opportunity" band I now have an s type which I longed for ever since I saw a friend restoring a Mk 1.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi Jim

I am funny about my cars and keeping them well so following your last post I have asked my mechanic to change the filter and I will ask him to source from the main dealer and as for the battery already done. The things that I get done you would think any car would be happy to be owned by me.... LOL

Lisa, as far as I'm aware ( stand to be corrected ) I'm unsure if the fuel filter would throw a code, could be wrong, but......

at 100k miles and definitely if you're unsure it's cheap maintenance item to do

Various ones are available and everyone has their own favourite, so take your pic

Bosch £19.49

Mann £18.99

Crossland £13.49

all available from Eurocarparts, or you could try your dealer who will relieve you of considerably more probably, but......always worth asking the question at least.

Should look like this, see below....easy to change

503590128.jpg

Each to their own, but as a service I generally replace it every year to 18 months, its a cheap insurance basically

Your car has covered 100k miles, and an 08 so around 8 years old, you should be aware of the battery Lisa. Our cars are very sensitive to weak / old / failing batteries and can cause all sorts of issues ( not necessarily related to this event ) but weird things happen

Get your battery checked to see it's state of health....If it's original and depending on your usage, cold winter months etc really take their toll on it, certainly worth looking at / bearing in mind if you're keeping the car long term ( 2- 3 years or more )

Hope it helps?

Best

Jim

Hi Lisa and welcome,

Jim, from my experience, you are partly right on the 'fuel filter may not throw a code' my 200k 2.0d went through a few fuel filters in its life and when a couple of them came near to the end I had the following happen, driving around town gently everything was normal, but as soon as I put my foot down/ motorway the car would jump into safe mode and the management light started flashing, you then pull over switch off for 10 mins re-start engine and all was fine but engine management light still flashed, until, you put your foot down then it would do the same again (blooming scary during an overtake when you don't know what's coming)). The garage said that due to the very high fuel supply pressures required for diesels, the moment that is compromised it puts the car into safe mode, so, when I did short journeys with little exceleration everything was fine (EML still flashed after first safe mode cut out).

What ticked me off with the Jag dealer was, they never offered to change the FF as a matter of course, I had to go through a couple of scary moments (sub 100k) before I took the initiative and told them to change it every 40k or so, excessive but I didn't want to go through that again.

just my experience and obviously may not be the case for everyone.

All the best, Lisa and hope everything is sorted soon for you and the cat

Cheers

Andrew

hi lisa, jimc64 is a top bloke and knows what hes on about. you could also try a product called oxicat a 300ml bottle costs abot £10-15 quid, no need to waste £100 plus getting terracleaned, this stuff dose it all, its a german product  that you add to under half a tank or under then simply top up, diesel or petrol. its far advanced than the likes of millers and the like, and you can fell it working, it does what itsays on the tin. cleans dpf, egr, injectors the lot, I used it on mine after I had used up half a tank I could feel it working, car so smooth and no more turbo lag either ,

Jaguar suggest that you should not put additives in your fuel, and although I have put certain well known additives in occasionally, I generally would not recommend additives of uncertain quality.

Terraclean is a proven process, and has been used my many members, including myself, with great success.

Right on the money, Jim,

my present car will get a new FF every service, it will do approx 5k per year so service annually, plus anything that crops up along the way.

One things for sure,  I ain't going through shocks like that again for such a small sum.

cheers

A

Just thought I would post a quick update on the latest news about my very poorly X Type.   The news is it is still off the road and not running. As mentioned before the EGR valve and the turbo actuated has both been changed and the car still refuses to run. Good news is all this walking to and from work is certainly  getting me fit... :wallbash:

Hi Guys

This is just another really quick update of the sorry state of my XType . Now I have dropped it of to a Jag specialist in the hope they will have the answers. at the moment in the process of changing the parts that have just been replaced with genuine Jaguar in hope that this will help. Fingers Crossed...............

Quick question for you all I need a new spare key as my car only has one has anyone got any advise on the best way of going about this as purchasing the key fob, blade and having it programmed at Jag very expensive. I know that I can get the key fobs and blades from places like eBay but I understand that this can be a mind field. Any   ideas out there

Thanks

Hi Lisa,

Have a look on the internet and see if you can find either an Auto Locksmith or an Auto Electrician. You could be lucky and find a mobile one  --- there is one round here!

Good Luck

Hi Guys are you ready for the latest installed of the very poorly X-Type.

If you remember this whole saga started back 21st Jan with the glow plug warning light flashing. I had the turbo and actuator charged along with the EGR and Air Mass filter all of which didn't solve me running issues. I then had the car moved to a Jaguar Specialist who said that it was a faulty Air Mass filter which they changed still not change. Then they moved to the actuator which they changed again no change finally we moved on the changing the Turbo again. I thought this would be a good point to change the fuel filter as well. After turbo number 2 I was given the long awaited call telling me the car was running great. Skipped all the way to pick it up. Got it home waited for the husband to get so that I could take him out for a quick burn up the motorway to prove that the £1200 just spent was worth every penny, turned the key and to my dismay there it was flashing at me that pesky GLOW PLUG light back to haunt me. Back to the garage we go (not so Skippy this time). Just had a call, I need to change all the injectors........ hoping to have the car back real soon....... Here hoping all is well this time. I will say at the point that Powerbell the garage that has been doing the work has been great they could have charged me a lot more then they have but have kept the labour charges to a minimum if you are in the Taplow area well worth using.
