245/40/18 tyres

Hi all,

We're finally getting round to replacing the tyres on the Jag. When I bought the car, all 4 were all in different conditions and from different manufacturers, which is shocking IMHO, especially for a car with the class and performance of the S-Type, so I can't wait to get a complete set and the more consistent handling they will offer.

At the recommend of a previous thread, I asked for Nexen and have been offered N'Fera SU1 at £100 per corner, fitted, valve and balanced etc. They which appear to have tested and been reviewed very well. The other option is Pirelli PZero at £135 a corner, despite the name being better known, I'm not convinced these are a better tyre and suspect I would be paying for the name. Prior to my taking the plunge, does anyone have any recommendations or anything else to contribute.

Many thanks, Russ

Hi Russ,

I replaced the Pirellis on my front wheels last year after some research on both cost and the EU standards as well as quietness.  I did the search through Halfords website [you don't have to buy the tyres there] and found that the top two were Goodyear Eagle asymmetric  and Vredestein.  I put Goodyear on as they were A rated in the wet for stopping.  Thy are rather good and very quiet, and when the rear tyres [Pirellis] need replacing Goodyears will go there.

I do know that Nexens are well respected and there are some members who also speak highly of them from their own experience.

But you are quite correct in thinking that each axle should have the same tyres on them with the same wear.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi all,

It is 245/40/18, I've been pricing various tyres for the fleet and mistyped, so I've changed the topic title.

Thanks for the recommend and prices Jim, did you recall what you paid for the 2 Goodyear Peter?

Cheers, Russ

I put Dunlop on the front of mine, as the DB rating was slightly lower, than the other makes I looked at (If I can find the web page I'll pop it on here) I think it was rated at 79DB I have noticed a difference, couldn't be any worse than the rubbish that was on her that's for sure

im sure this was the web site

Russ, we regularly have the goodyear eagles that Peter has mentioned on our test cars (along with many other brands that we test) and they seem to be great performers. Wet and dry grip is very good, they seem to last longer that a lot of other premium brands and  i seem to remember one of our engineers telling me that we don't seem to get as much damage on those tyres, we do give our tyres a good hammering at work and damage on any tyre under normal road driving conditions is a rare thing.

Hi Russ,

I paid £228 for the two plus £25 to have the tracking checked and corrected slightly.  I got them from Halfords who will match or reduce other local dealers.  There is a Kwik Fit 500 yards away who were charging £230!

Thanks for this Peter, that seems a good price, I'm still tempted by the Nexens though. I've decided to have the wheels refurbed before I fit the tyres and I have all the brakes to do as well. Handling and stopping should be transformed

Hi Russ

my S type R has 245 40 18 at the front and 275 35 18 at the rear

these are the factory standard on the S type R

Jaguar recomend Continental contisport contact 3, which are fitted and seem ok so far

but if you look on you driver door shut, by the the dash, the recomended sizes, pressure's and tyres are on that label

cheers

Hi Joe,

Thanks for this, nice rims, but I have a set of 4 Vulcans which I really like, if I could only buy the x2 9.5 rears it would be perfect. I came close to a set last summer, and if I knew what I know now, I would've bid more on them. Hen's teeth and rocking horse s**t spring to mind! For now I'm going to have mine refurbed with the new Nexen's, and if I find the staggered rears at a later time, they will make a great addition, or I could use a proper job hub bolted spacer to achieve a similar effect. As even with the 245's they still don't fill the arches well IMHO, which is an issue Jaguar recognised and solved with the staggered rims.

Cheers, Russ

Hi all,

I'm reviving this original thread as I'm about to take the plunge and wanted to check something before I made a final decision. I'd more or less decided on the Nexen's, either an N8000 or N Fera SU4, when on checking the reviews I came across these Winrun R330's being given top reviews, a solid C rating on wet grip and economy and rated to 168mph, which should be just about adequate .

My surprise was finding these locally at c£50 per corner including fitting! Too good to be true? I hope not as I need them quite desperately and this is a very good price I can go for right away. I've called the stockist and they sound sensible and can book me in next week, so unless anyone has a horror story or strongly disagrees, I may give them a try .

All the best, Russ

Hi Russ,

Last year there was a survey on the subject of tyres and the Goodyear Eagle came out top with a A grade for wet grip, with Vredestein second.  I have them on the front and will put them on the rear when the Pirellis need changing.

I have also seen Nexens recommended by drivers who have used them, and I think when someone you know recommends something it is a bit more accurate than something you see when buying something.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi all,

I went for the Winrun R330's yesterday and I must say that my initial feedback is very positive. Before committing I spoke to the supplier a couple of times, and I was pleasantly surprised that on arrival it was a decent modern outfit with smart new kit and helpful staff. Final sign off involved a good look at the tyres before fitting and they seemed great, close to a Pzero sidewall and tread pattern but c1/3 the price!

All in including; valve, balance, rim sealer and fitting I paid £216 for the complete set of 4! Which I am stunned by for a tyre of this size and performance, who said running a Jag was expensive! On the road the car seems transformed, I've only done 30 miles or so, and I take it (relatively) easy for the 1st 1K or so with new tyres in any case, but they seem composed, predictable and grippy, which is as much as I can really ask for .

I'll inform if anything comes up to change my opinion, but at present it's a big thumbs up to the Winrun R330 and to EcoTyres in Southampton who supplied and fitted them .

Cheers, Russ

Just a quick update as I know Paul (Raistlin) was interested and I saw a post about recommended tyres come back up,  I had the chance to do a bit of enthusiastic country lane driving this morning and the grip and balance of the Winruns is amazing, really confidence inspiring. That said I only have the motley selection that were on there before, but currently I cannot praise the R330's enough, as did the others who put them top of a recent review poll. You can pay 2 or 3 times as much as the £216 I paid all in for all 4, but I don't see why you would...
