X type for first car?!

Recommended Posts

Hi cat lovers

I've been researching a first car to buy. I've been looking at all sorts, from random discoveries to suggestions from friends and family. Nothing that has really court my eye. Then I came across the marvellous looking x type jag, and I fell in love with it straight away. I'm only 25 and I know that it may be considered a (older guys) car but I don't care I simply like what I like. What I see is a car of supreme class and a classic look that will never be outdated. I haven't had the chance to drive one yet but from what I've researched it sounds like it will heaven. I've been researching the car every night like a mad scientist (#jagbug) thanks to forums like this one and others. So thank you, to all the Jaguar community you all have a special way about you and a deep appreciation for this car. I've told friends and family that I want this car for my first car and they've said it's not wise, but they've never owned one. So my question to you guys is what are your thoughts on owning a Jaguar x-type for my first car? and any advise on what model to go for my budget is between £3000-£4000 preferably £3000. Any replies will be much appreciated.

Kind Regards

James

Absolutely James, I agree with Jim.  Go for it and help bring the so called and rumoured 'average driver age' down ... and help make it a young man's car too!  As Jim's sons are doing.

Find yourself a beauty, which, given your budget, should be eminently do-able.  As Jim suggests, take your time, and maybe test drive a few options; but always keep one eye on the all important history which, in fairness, you would be doing with any car you buy.

Good luck,

Rowley.

Thank you so much Jim and Rowley. Nice advice guys and your sons cars are amazing you must be so proud of them Jim. From what I've seen the diesels are quite cheap to run and seems to be quite reliable but I have seen the odd horror story on these forums. So Jim with your three sons having one each, have any of them had any extreme problems that we're very expensive, and what are your thoughts on warranty.

P.s are any of your sons willing to sell there Jaguar x type 😉

kind regards

James

Hi James and welcome to the club.

Don't worry about the horror stories about diesels.

Buy your car from an established dealer, and with a warranty if you can.  I had a rather good X type 2.5 petrol and it was a great car.

Just make sure that the car is clean and straight and has a reasonable service history.

Have a test drive and if it feels cared for, then it is the one for you.

Regards,

Peter.

Sounds great Peter thanks for your reply, do you have any recommended dealers within the West Midlands. I was quite interested in the 2.5 petrol but from what I've seen you don't get much mpg and don't won't to spend a ton on petrol especially for my first car. But my dad recommends petrol. What is your experience with the petrol version and is it expensive to run?

kind regards James

Hi James,

There are some good dealers in the West Midlands.  You don't need to go too far to view a good car and to me Clitheroe is a long way away.

It does look like a good car, and it might be worth a look at.  The price is not unreasonable either.

Evans Halshaw is a dealer that belongs to a big chain and will bring you a car that you like to one of their dealers near you,

Regards,

Peter.

james its nice that you love our jag's   but  do you know what your insurance will be on a car like this ? as it could cost you more than the car... just a thought. my first car was a right shed, but it helped me build up my insurance.

Good post, David!

My insurance is over £500  --  full no claims and no claim bonus protected. No accident and a clean licence plus a dash cam which gives me a 12.5% reduction in the premium.

The West midlands is an expensive place to get insurance.

James,

That's a fair point from David about insurance costs, but then I would hope that you will have thoroughly researched prices for your circumstances already.

And that example you post at £3,290, yes, the car looks clean enough but there are things you can learn about both the car and the Dealer simply from the wording of the ad; not much mention of 'history' other than 'VOSA MOT history', that would suggest (to me anyway) that the service book is not fully stamped which would ring alarm bells.  That would be the first thing to check over the phone before you even go and see it.  A reputable Dealer would likely send you photos of the service book stamps if you ask nicely and sound interested.
