Cam belt change XF 3.0 on low mileage

Hi Neil, and welcome to the Club.

I don't know for certain about the XF cam belt change, but I do know that the S Type 2.7 diesel which preceded the XF is required to have a cam belt change at 105,000 miles OR 10 years whichever comes first.

I would check with Jaguar.

I firmly believe that is in all car manufacturers interests to over-claim when a timing belt needs replacing.

I personally never take a belt on any car beyond 40, 000 miles as it's cheaper to replace a belt than an engine

I was told by Jaguar dealership before I purchased my 3.0l diesel (what was then high mileage at 108,000), that the cambelts where due at 112,000 or 10 Years.  As soon as I bought the car I had cambelts changed at same time as a major service.  I also have a 2.5Tdi Shogun sport which I bought from new (2007) and has only done 60,000 miles.  On that car I insisted on having cambelt changed some 3 years or more ago just to feel safe!  Having read tales of unfortunate souls whom failed to have the cambelt changed and their engines blown up (literally apparently), I choose to have that rubber replaced! 

The posts above describing any perishing of rubber is spot on by the way.  It isn't necessarily down to mileage, one close look when engine casing opened up should be enough for any one of us to dig deep and get it changed.  Quite a lot of work to change the cambelts hence the price though.

I have a XF 3.0 diesel  V6 luxury model 2011.  it's near to 80k on the clock so it's in tomorrow at my local Jag dealer for the cam belt change that's £625 they inform me it's 101k or 10 years prefer to change now!!  Asked for water pump and fuel pump belt at same time their getting back to me on cost for parts! could get cam belt done for £450 but have chosen to stay with the dealer on this job their 2 year guarantee on the work/parts done it for me plus they've done other jobs and all has been excellent. maybe cheaper at a indy, but you wont get genuine parts

I'd prefer pay the extra for genuine parts my self

Hi Jon,

I think you can relax a bit.  105k miles or 10 years is the criteria.

My s type which has done 85k miles but had a new engine at 21k miles which leaves it with 64k miles and 11 years, BUT the belts have been examined by my mechanic and are found to be in excellent order.

Hi guys, my first post here.

I have the XF 3.0d S 2009 model just over 86k miles, I have just had new cam belt and fuel pump belt fitted.

I was worried as the car is 10 years old now so, made enquires with Jag for pricing, they quoted for the :-

cam belt £758.27 + the vat that is £516 labour and about £242 for parts + vat

v belt £182.42 + the vat that is £142 labour and £42.52 for parts + vat

Just as I was getting ready to book in to have the work done I got the dreaded restricted performance message, I think the code was P006A.

It turned out to be the rocker/inlet covers yes both of them had cracked and leaking, so in touch with Jag again for prices got quoted :-

Both cover and parts fitted £2220.96 + vat that is £1354.50 labour + vat and for parts £866.46 + vat 

So a grand total for everything done at main dealer £3793.98.

I found a local indie Jag specialist near Ringwood called Hollygrove independent Jaguar with an excellent write up so got them to quote me,

so for everything needed to do the 2 rocker/inlet covers the v belt and the cam belt all genuine Jag parts £2024.01

that is £695.61 + vat for all the parts and £1000 for the labour + vat.

I believe it took 14 or 15 hours work to complete and the cam covers are bugger to do.

Needless to say I had the work done at the Indie garage and now my Jag is fabulous again.

By the way the cam belt that came off my car looked in good condition its a big long heavy duty belt that's for sure.

The indie also supplied a free courtesy s type Jag and washed my car for me very impressed with them.

Just joined and this is my first post. I have a 2010 XF Sport (110,000 miles) and I have just booked it in for a major service and cam belt change. I have booked it in with a company in Stockton-on-Tees, called Jag Tech. They are an independent Jag specialist company, who not only use all genuine Jag parts but also update the on-line service history. I thought their prices to be very reasonable. The belt change is £300, including vat and the cambelt change is £469.20 including vat. Until last year, I had always used the local Jag Dealer for any work on my car but they did such a bad job on an expensive repair, I swore never to use them again. The car needed a new intercooler on the turbo, which was specifically excluded in the small print on the extended warranty. The cost of the job was around £1000, they had the car most of the week and could not offer me a customer car. The day I picked it up, I drove about 2 miles when the dashboard lit up with warnings and the car went into limp mode. I pulled over and discovered I had lost all of the engine coolant, as the bottom hose had come off. It turns out they hadn't put a clip on it? Needles to say the car had to be recovered back to the garage! I will let people know how things go with Jag Tech after the work has been done....Derek

Got 3ltr v6 67000 miles on clocks when should I think about cam belts just had full service at very good indy garage no mention of it in the report the only thing mentioned was brakes to be done

      Entry with your Jaguar is from 9am – 2pm. Please make sure you have your ticket printed or available on your phone, ready to be scanned on arrival.

      Please do not arrive early for our Simply rallies as no facilities will be open prior to 9:30am.

      Cars cannot leave and re-enter the grounds for the Simply rallies.

      CLUB STAND ATTENDEE LIST

      We do ask for a final update on numbers 2 weeks prior to the event following which we will send out club labels to you via email for you to then distribute out to club members. Club members then need to print and display these in their windscreen on arrival. This helps us then park you all in your club area together.
