Fight to the death

Having changed my car, I've been sorting insurance.

I've been with Sainsburys for years and usually get a good deal from them.

As well as a change of car my policy is also up for renewal so I had them quote on the S-Type 3.0... £1860.

To put that into context, this year's premium, albeit on the 2.7, was £399.

I normally expect a little horse trading with Sainsburys underwriters but this time they basically said "Tough" and would not give ground at all.

Having received a quote from Churchill for £440, I phoned Sainsburys this morning to give them the vehicle changeover date and at the same time I told them to cancel the policy when it runs out.

The person I spoke to expressed surprise as it was clear that I had been a Sainsburys insurance customer for years.

She said they could do "a little better" on their quote, and it changed from £1860 to £445.

What a fight I had to get a realistic quote.

I wasn't looking forward to telling SWMBO that she would have to forego her Nectar points ;)

HI Paul

Mine's insured with Footman James

Its actually on a classic policy and insured for just under £300

with protected NCB, only £50 excess and agreed value on the car

very good customer service, they spoke fluent english and are based in the uk, even the documents came in the post, did not have to print them myself

cheers

Joe

That's a good deal Joe, I must bear those guys in mind when mine comes up for re-newal next year.

Sadly, as my experiences with insurance (home or car) echo Pauls, it seems we all have to beat the insurers up before they will give us  reasonable deal. To now the only outfit I've come across that did not try to gouge the price on re-newal was the Post Office so I always check them out first and use them as a bench-mark for others.

Whilst I'm on the subject of dumb, money-grubbing insurance companies. When the first re-newal anniversary rolled around for my first S Type I happened to be out of the country for a few weeks and so missed the date. When I called the insurer (Norwich Union) a couple of days after the renewal date to sort this out I was give a price that was nearly three times the quoted premium in the renewal documentation. After a long intake of breath and a prolonged discussion with the call centre, in which I passed over to a supervisor. it became crystal clear that they would not budge off the new price. Needless to say I placed my business with another insurer and at a price that was marginally better than the original renewal quote from NU.

The conclusion I took from all this was that NU just did not want to take my business.

My renewal's due and the people I've been with for a couple of years quoted £380. I paid £300 last year but they said in the renewal letter I'd paid £550!

I phoned them and they dropped it down to what it was last year but with  £30 worth of extras taken off. No -one at the office can explain the £550 but they accept it's wrong and said it must be a typo.

A week later they wrote to me with a quote of £280 with the £30 worth of extras included.  All well and good, I like money off, but that letter also said I'd paid £550 last year.. I just pray I don't have to trust them with a claim.

I like them. At one point I was running two classics insured as such and it cost much, much less than having either one on a standard policy.

The stipulation at the time was that you had to have regular use of another car, nothing said the other one couldn't be a classic. I think most insurers have tightened up on that now..
