Diagnostic Scan Tool

Hi

Best out there is a Mongoose lead and Jaguar IDS/SDD, can be bought from place like British diagnostics, you can everthing Jaguar can, it will talk to every module on the car, about £100

the next best is Icarsoft I930 or LRII, this will talk to some modules, but not every thing, but is the most comprehensive one out there, about £120 to £150

if you have a touch screen, you can enter a hidden menu and read any engine fault codes and clear them, but with this hidden menu there a nav update button, which a lot of people seem to press and you have to press it twice, theres a confirmation action, this needs special software and on pressing it, will clear the nav units software and you end up with just a black screen, but for reading fault  codes when your out and about is great, as you can read them before turning your engine off, as the faults sometime clear when the ignition is cycled

the Jaguar ids/sdd is a superb diagnostic tool, you can read all live data and on certain ecu's like the STR there also a built in data logger, where engine sensors, gear box sensors and a lot more is logged and is accessible

I also occasionally use a cheap bluetooth  elm type unit, cheap as chips about £5 and app like "torque pro", paired to my phone to monitors short and long term fuel trims, to find faults, this is handy as it works on almost every car.

cheers

Joe

I've so many other projects going on that I haven't yet bought one, but since we have three different cars, I'm seriously considering the Foxwell NT510, as other cars can be added to it.

Mongoose can be found i.e. here:

And British Diagnostic can be found here:

I got one of these, only £10 on eBay and wired, so avoids the issue of it not talking to your phone or tablet. Imagine it won't do everything the more expensive one's do, but you get what you pay for and it's worked well for me so far :wink1:

For what it's worth,

I use the Mongoose and my laptop for all major things. Requires time plus a battery charger of at least 30 amps to ensure the car's battery does not drain because SDD / IDS is heavy on the juice, powering most of the electronics/ electrics on the car. I was given that tip by a Jaguar indie. I also use a battery charger for my laptop as well. I'm paranoid about bricking a car owing to lack of power at the wrong moment. There isn't a week goes by without Denis and I connecting and running SDD / IDS on somebody or other's car ;) You need to be careful of the SDD / IDS version you run. Too late and it will not function without an internet link to Topix. V1.39 is just about perfect, IF you can get a copy. I can provide a copy if you get yourself a Mongoose.

I found that a dedicated Windows XP laptop works far better than using a Windows XP virtual machine on a laptop with later operating system. In fact, my dedicated laptop, a beautiful Sony Vaio, cost me £15 complete with a genuine Windows XP licence. I also use it for all the PDF wiring diagrams and electronic parts catalogue, JTIS etc.

I use the iCarSoft LR2 if I'm in a hurry because the SDD / IDS takes an age to load. It is an excellent item and does quite a few of the functions of the SDD / IDS, including real-time data while driving.

I was given the Foxwell NT510 to try and to be fair, I couldn't get on with it. Kept on freezing, changing menu pages randomly, and I didn't find it particularly intuitive as the LR2 is (don't shoot the messenger, just my experience).

I also use a bog standard OBDII as Russ suggests for quick DTC checks and resetting of MIL.

Hope this helps :)

Well now waiting with baited breath as ordered the British one, it's for jaguars so it should work ok.

And I now find out that a so called friend who borrowed the car to go to a wedding put two !Removed! well TWO bottles of redex in the car with only half a tank!! And I was wondering why it was smoking with no lights on any where.

hi

The one I bought from British diagnostics came with the software that's runs on VMWare, which you install vmware and then loads a image, its a virtual machine, it works OK

but its no where near as stable as running on a windows XP pro machine,

if I'm setting anything up, I use my dedicated windows XP pro laptop, if I'm just reading and resetting code the either OK

cheers

  • 3 weeks later...

Having had varying amounts of challenge / failure with this I thought id share my experience so Far.

With help from fellow forum member/moderator - Raistlin (Paul) I have gotten some way to having a diagnostics tool up and running. I saw this thread somewhat too late to help Mike and those that might have gone off and ordered that product based on experiences. Londonmike apologies for not tuning in sooner i could have helped a little more!

I will explain what I've done so far..... Ordered I car soft i9300 through E bay (In November) and that finished up with me returning it (as it didn't want to connect) despite the E bay seller telling me it was good for my model....I contacted the manufacturer in the US who said i needed an LR 2 Model and that i9300 was incompatible. I didn't order the LR 2.  That took three weeks to sort and the money eventfully refunded through pay-pal. I had to pay the postage at £12 grrr.

Next...I then tried British Diagnostics as that was suggested from various posts etc. I asked them (BD) a brief question about the operating system software and got a very swift reply that was to do with the latest MS units which it doesn't (IMHO) properly mention on the BD website. I immediately ordered (15th Dec) the lead and software and got an instant invoice. It was on 48 hours delivery. But after three days nothing arrived. A week went by and nothing. So i messaged. There was no reply. I messaged several more times and got no reply to any of my messages.  I thought if i make a call to them but you will notice there is no telephone number. I had paid through pay-pal so raised it with them. They suggested cancelling the order. I then got a message from BD on 3rd Jan promising a refund as they seemingly couldn't fulfil the order. That duly occurred. Lots of effort here so far but no result yet!

So seeing this post and thanks to Paul I went down the route of getting the OBD ....

Mongoose: http://www.obdii.co.uk/car-diagnostic-tools-c-2/jlr-mongoose-for-jaguar-and-land-rover?zenid=p4c3cv188m55o7r8715a0kc5f3

I ordered that last week and it came yesterday but this finished at £67 and you get a message from the courier saying that before they deliver they need to be paid import duty at £17. I paid on arrival and I then asked OBD about it saying they had not advised of this at time of order. They refunded that to me earlier today.......If you don't ask....

I am currently working on a partition for my windows7 machine with a recent purchase of Windows XP pro so i can run the JTIS and SDD / IDS  on the same machine

I came across this post whilst trawling another forum:  https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xk8-xkr-x100-17/british-diagnostics-ids-sdd-173843/

Having said all of that i know some of you have had success with BD...but not all of us:wallbash:

Hope you are sorted now MIke. Let us know how you got on.

Rgds
