XF buying guide

I have searched on the Forum but cannot find any definitive guide on what to look for when buying a second hand Jaguar XF so am hoping for some first hand advice and experiences.

My leanings are towards the 3 litre petrol but there are very few for sale compared to the diesel version and trim wise my preference would be for a Premium Luxury / Portfolio model as we would find memory seats very useful.

Whilst not entirely ruling out a diesel model I am not a fan due to the complexity of modern diesel engines and the experience of friends having had turbocharger, EGR and DPF failures on a range of (generally German) diesel cars.

The other problem with looking for a diesel version is that they are often high mileage vehicles as hey have usually been run as company cars, I would, ideally be looking for a  car from 2009 with , hopefully around 100,000 miles or less. This would be my main commuting car (40 miles a day on fast A roads) for the next 5 years.

Thanks in advance

Regards

Hi David,

I've only had the XF-S diesel Portfolio but I have to say it's delightful, easily as fast as my previous 4.2 V8 S-type, fantastic handling for a big car , quiet, comfortable with a lovely interior.

Downside, probably not as economical as you'd expect for a diesel, I average about 37 mpg on a 40 mile round trip to work and a fairly easy drive.

Hope that helps,

Mike

Mike

Thank you for your reply.

Consumption of 37mpg sounds good for a large and quick car, I average 27mpg in the Mercedes, up to 35mpg on a motorway run  :)

I am also trying to get a feel for common failures or issues on these cars, some of the modern MB Diesels are requiring replacement turbochargers at the 100,000 mile mark!

Hi David,

The front discs were replaced at about 50000 miles, despite Jaguars protestations to the contrary ZF say the gearbox should be serviced at 62000 miles (100000 km) other than that and servicing I haven't needed anything done.

Hi David,

I have got the XF S PORTFOLIO V6 diesel 2012 facelift model and it’s the best car I’ve driven, I was deciding to go for the 5.0 V8 or the diesel and I can honestly say I’m really impressed with the diesel.

I am new to Jaguar and I can honestly say I’m never going back. I get around 39mpg and tbh I’m still having fun with the car. Makes me smile every time I start the engine. When I’m sport mode you wouldn’t even think it’s a diesel it sounds like a petrol. 0-60 5.9seconds! That’s unbelievable for a diesel.

You will not be disappointed trust me.

Regards

Gary
