Fix a misfire?

I have a 2005 S Type that has a misfire. When you put it in Drive, everything seems to be ok. As soon as you move forward the car starts beeping continuously. When you come to a stop, the beeping stops. The car is on 'limited performance mode' and the engine light is flashing. I would like to repair this myself. Does anyone know what needs to be done or what is actually going on in the car?

Thanks!

Hi Lewis and Welcome to the Club,

You'll need a decent ODB2 code reader to get the bottom of the problem and to re-set the DSC's afterwards. These can be a bit pricey so I'd suggest you see if you can find a member in your neighbourhood who has one before buying. I recently purchased an iCarsoft i930, with the Jaguar/Landrover software, but am still having problems getting it to read the ECU codes so I'd stay away from that one for now.

If the above are not good options you could try a local Jag dealer or Indie to download the codes for you.

Hope this helps, good luck.

Steve

After replacing coils and spark plug's and resetting the whole system, removing all codes everything seems to be good, except for put the car in gear and going forward your   hearing beeping, and when you stop it's stops going in reverse everything beep's when stopped everything stops, can anyone help.

Hey Lewis,

Do you have parking sensors at the front end of the car as well as the back?

Normally parking sensors only engage during low speed manoeuvres and have a limited range, I believe the range is about three metres. The reversing sensors remain active until you shift gears out of Reverse and I understand that the front sensors will disengage when the car starts to travel above a low speed, maybe 10mph.

Another thought; does your car have the anti-collision warning system that was fitted as an option to some S Types? If so, this may be the problem.

Have you checked the actual coolant level in the tank and looked for any evidence of leaks? There can be a number of causes for this problem including a dud sensor, real leaks, etc.

Which Yellow and Red lights are displayed?

If you can answer some of these I may be able to help further.

Cheers,

Steve

Thanks Steve for helping me,       The  parking sensors is on the front and rear,        I bought the car 2 weeks ago always wanted one,  The previous owners have no idea,        There's a little crack in the front bumper not near the sensors,      How would I tell if it has the Collision sensor,               The coolant thing I thing I fixed,        It's the oval yellow and red light under the tachometer,        Thank you.

It's about two beats per second,     Nothing comes up on codes,    it has 105000 miles on it,     it is the sport model,      It's also in great shape and very clean,       I'm loving the car and working on it,     The only thing now is the bleeping.

Happy to be of help Lewis,

The parking sensors, front and rear, are not an uncommon problem area with anything from one or more dud sensors, faulty controller and corroded/bad electrical connections.

I forgot to ask in my previous whether the bleeping continues when you accelerate away to normal driving speeds? If so, its most likely to be the controller and/or its connections to the gear selector.

You can check for a dud sensor, front or back, by setting the parking brake with the engine running and the wheels blocked and selecting forward or reverse, depending on which end you want to test, you will need to get very close to each sensor in turn and listen for a slight 'ticking' sound. If you can hear this sound the sensor is working properly. If you cannot hear anything either the sensor is dud or the wiring connection may be damaged/corroded (either way its a pain as you will have to remove the bumper to make any repair.

Again, hope this helps.

Cheers,

Steve

Well it's good to know I get it right now and again - now how can I persuade the First Lady that it can and does happen, wait she'll never be persuaded that I could be right about anything.

Enjoy, and by the way, that aching in your cheeks - the facial ones - thats the Jag Grin taking hold.
