Engine issue on my 2004 d

Hi everyone

Had my 2004 x-type  a few months now & all was fine till i was driving the kids home today

Went to put my foot down on a dual carriageway to pass a slower car & i heard a pop from the engine bay, some power loss happened but i managed to get off it & nurse it the 1 mile home at very slow speed, when i come off the revs i can hear a distinct whirring noise like a turbo which was never present before, there is also a faint smell of rubber that i noticed, noise is from the nearside of the engine bay but everything is under the big cover so i can't see much

If anyone can offer any advice as to what it may be it would be greatly appreciated as i need to get the kids back to their mum's tomorrow evening & if it's not an easy fix i will have to arrange a hire car if possible

Have attached a video of the noise, hope it is clear enough

if its not revving correctly ?  it maybe your turbo actuator ?  but there are two types, you need to check which you have ? if you have time look through recent posts in (x type topic) as it will help you find what to look for.  or it maybe a split hose?  good luck with your search, and hope you sort out the problem..

Heard a 'pop'... Lack of Power... whiring noise like a turbo, never heard before...

My money is on a boost pipe.

I'm 90% sure the diesel was the same engine as the Ford TDCi 'Duratorq' lump (fitted to Mondeos and Transits and a few other models), if so, i've known of at least 5 that blew a boost pipe just in my small circle of friends.

stuart,   you will never guess whats happened ? !  but Saturday out in the jag and the exact same thing has now happened to me.  up till now I have checked and cleaned the EGR valve, plus checked the plunger in the EGR for movement when under vacuum....works ok. checked turbo actuator arm for movement also when under vacuum...seems ok ? checked booster pipe from EGR valve down to map sensor... no splits. also checked the vacuum actuation supply unit which sits under the car ( needs engine cover off ) this also works ok.  next to check when I get time is the pre-charge pipe from map sensor to air cooler/radiator.. but at the moment we are getting ready to go on are holidays, so its all on hold this moment.... so if you get yours fixed before me ? !  please let us all know your outcome as to what your problem was.. because it will be great help for all us other jag owners...  regards dave.

When mine lost power like you it was accompanied by a background hissing noise, like escaping air. Turned out to be the intercooler hose with a small but developing split somewhere hidden. The split was really quite small, just shows that it doesn't take much to affect performance. The clips have also been known to degrade with age and create the same effect. Like Rich, my money would be on a hose or associated clips in that area.

  • 2 weeks later...

well back off me holidays....and straight onto checking me intercooler/rad,  boost pipe,  map sensor and  pipe to intercooler, well the hardest job was to take the front bumper undercover off, 19 screws to undo but they where nearly all rusted up, so had to angle grind them off.  (cover off)  which then reveled the problem straight away.....a jubilee clip had rusted and blown the boost pipe off.  so down to me shed and put a new clip on the pipe...job done, test to make sure....now I need my :wheelchair: as my joints ache. 5aef51b91ad63_frontbumperundercovertray.thumb.JPG.2ffe293e3c6b2bbecbe050e3b6581366.JPG5aef51e628ee7_damagedclip.thumb.JPG.6b726f6063cfe8600cbdd17332847fb2.JPG5aef52086693e_jagboostpipe.thumb.JPG.a8f32da610a4d1edb5de057fa5dc6575.JPG5aef5241d25a1_radandpipe.thumb.JPG.e59d4ca63dd7f69e25bd881001fd4fe9.JPG5aef5259a9aa7_boostpipejag.thumb.jpg.a30cc579be515d0b71e00febec6c58e4.jpg5aef52b94028a_intercoolerandpipe.thumb.jpg.a7fa8a75a6f98bbaa8ae6f28fb26b89a.jpg
