AN XF Sportbrake Newbie.

Good morning,

I'm Paul from Cheshire and I hope to be the owner of an XF Sportbrake soon.

I'll need to ask for advice when I get the car, but before I do, can anyone please tell me what (S/S) signifies in some of the car listings I have seen, please?

Thanks in advance.

Paul.

Mine is fitted with it and the Jaguar system is much most intelligent than most I have experienced previously.  In fact on holiday in Italy in June we had a brand new VW Golf hire car and I hated it so much that after the first day the first thing I reached for was of off button.  I have only had my XF just over 8 weeks and when I got it never worked, I later learned, when the weather cooled that it measures electrical demand and climate control demand and does not turn off the engine when demand is high on either of these.  You can also "feather" the footbrake as you come to a halt so that it just holds the car,  say at a roundabout or another situation where you can see you are only having to stop momentarily and this prevents it from stopping the engine as well.  Other means of controlling it is by using the gear selection paddles which changes the driving mode to manual has the same effect.  Also on the approach to a roundabout, I pull both paddles simultaneously which also changes to manual mode but selects the most appropriate gear, this also prevents it switching off the engine.  As you accelerate away in manual a pull of two seconds on the up paddle changes back to automatic mode.   When you come to the end of your drive brake to a halt, apply the parking brake and release your seatbelt before taking your foot off the footbrake and the system will shut down the car and move your gear selector to park without you touching anything else.

Must admit I am now a convert to Start/Stop (at least in the Jaguar) I can't complain about the economy.

Brilliant information. Thank you, Bill. :thumbup1:

At the risk of being shot for asking another question in my introduction, does anyone know why some Sportbrakes have the 'S' badge on the front grille (as well as the rear tailgate), please?

Hi Paul.

The normal 3-0 litre engine is about 240 bhp, but the XF model with the S badge have an upgraded engine with 275 bhp.

Regards Tom.

Thanks, Tom.

I'm confused because some of the 3.0lt "S" models have the "S" on just the tailgate, but some have the "S" on the front grille as well as on the tailgate.

This car, listed as an "S" doesn't have the "S" on either rear tailgate or front grille. Perhaps the badge has been nicked? :)

There's something about the above car that doesn't sit well.

The price has been reduced and the MOT expired in April, which suggests the dealer has has it for a fair while.

The best way to find out if the car is an S model is to get the Vin Number usually on the nearside at the bottom of the windscreen, and then contact Jaguar to find out which model it is.

The car in the video doesn't seem to be an S model because there is not a S badge on the lower spoke of the steering wheel.

Some Dealer's can miss sell cars and even with the x type, Jaguar had miss sold them and owner's had to get the VC 5 forum changed.

As mentioned above get the Vin Number.

Regards Tom.

Thanks again, Tom.

I had checked the history which is why I knew the MOT expired in April, which tells me it's possible the dealer has had it for quite some time - I do know the price has been reduced.

No S badge on the steering wheel is a great clue - I would never have thought of that. Thank you.

I'm not sure the dealer would want to part with the VIN, but it's worth a try.

I often have to call and request the reg number for cars that have a dealers promotional plate concealing the reg.

Hi Tom. I have been doing a little research and although I think I have one answer I may well have confused things a little further.

I have found that:

Cars that have the S on the front grille (as well as on the tailgate) have the S on the steering wheel.

Cars that have the S on only the tailgate don't have the S on the steering wheel.

Yet, even with my limited knowledge of the XF, I'm pretty sure that having an S on the tailgate does mean the car is an S model.

So I wonder why some have the additional S on the front grille and steering wheel?
