Winter Coming Soon!

Heavy rain this morning.  No garage for the S Type as she is too big to fit into a 1980 garage.  At least the rain is giving the car a good rinse.  I am halfway through giving the car a good wax for the winter -- resume when it is dry.  I will check out any boot leaks when the rain stops!

Hi Peter,

What is it about 1980s garages - do you think the planners decided they would never be used for cars anyway, so shrunk them. I used to have a Mercedes A Class, which would have squeezed in, but I would have had to spend the night in the car as no room to open the door! No chance of getting near it with an XF!

Ho-hum!

Hi Jon,

My garage was built in 1980 in a extension by the previous owner and my wife's cars always fitted in, as did my Rover 400. But now that my wife has a Toyota Yaris it won't fit in unless the wing mirrors are folded in.and even then there is only two inches on either side.  I have even bought about widening the door, but the Yaris has a reversing camera so getting out can be done without too much of a problem.  I think cars are a bit wider than they used to be.

Regards,

Peter

I have rented a lock up to store my XKR, otherwise it would be on the road all the time. Upside is its roomy. Downside its a 25 minute walk or need jump leads if left for too long. I suspect my garage at home may be too small, its certainly full of stuff I may never need (ie pushbike, cement mixer and boxes of stuff from a previous life!

I have the same problem re my Garage it sits at right angles behind our house.  The driveway is very narrow and you need to reverse it in as you would have no vision exiting straight onto the street reversing out.  When reversing in you had to turn 90 deg to get into the garage also with not a lot of room for this manouvre.  The last car I managed to get in was a Triumph Acclaim I had when we moved in here in 1983.  Even then you had to fold the mirrors in and that only left 2 inches from the back of the mirrors to the walls on either side.  Needless to say my cars since the Acclaim, Vauxhall Carleton, Jaguar X-Type (twice), Nissan X-Trail, Volvo XC90 and currently Jaguar FX have never enjoyed the luxury of being indoors.  It is a large garage and only used for storage now.

Thoroughly recommend the Breakfast meet at Gaydon.       We attend most months, the most recent last Saturday (March 02) where upwards of 140 Jaguars attended, from a SS through Mk2, E-type, XJS, various XJ and X-type, XF, etc etc.          If you want breakfast, you need to purchase an admission ticket to the museum, but at £12 and valid for 12 months, that's a pretty good deal!     Ours is just about to expire, but our visits over the past 12 months have worked out at less than £1 a head.

The Jaguar Heritage Hall is worth the visit on its own, but it is a great opportunity to exchange views and experiences with like-minded folk.

We try to alternate our visits between our X150 XK and our XJS, with the S-type appearing if the weather is poor.

On the topic of garages, we are fortunate in having a one and a half car sized garage within which is a Carcoon - for the XK, along with a good-sized garage with a door mounted dust screen for the XJS.  Unfortunately, the S-type (daily driver) sits outside.   Totally agree with regard to modern garage sizes - really only any good for placing the washingmachine/dryer and sundry tat!   Whilst looking at properties recently, with a view to a move, we dismissed many properties because of totally inadequate garaging.   Perhaps a plot of land with a tent for us, and a purpose-built three car would be a good idea?!!
