Hi every one new yo this stuff I was a massive MG freak and owned a lot of them and when my last one was written off at Xmas I bought my self a s type 2.7d xs pef code. I'm in love with it the best car I've ever owned yet i say that till two weeks ago and the auto box started play up. It slams it self in gear at time and some time it feels like it slips and the car ends up reving high and going no where fast. So I went to my garage and he said that a gearbox service with new pan as filters built it should sort this issue but with a very said look on my face  I tell you all that it hasn't at all if any thing and I think it may be get more often its happening. I'm looking at gaining some ideas of what it maybe as I'm new to autos too ive been told it could be solenoids in the gear box so could some one please help me get to the bottom of it thanks in advance

Welcome to the club, Danny.

I have had an S Type 2.7 d for the last 7 years, and like you, are thoroughly enjoying Sir William Lyons' "Grace, Pace and Space".

I have only had one minor issue with the XF gearbox and that was when I was using the manual system to slow the engine down on downhill roads. I have had auto gearboxes for 18 years and this is the only issue I have had.

I am not an expert in the mechanics of a car, but I do know of a company that is expert on gearboxes.  Unfortunately it is in Scotland.  I would google around and see if there is someone like that in the South of England.

Good Luck,

Peter.

hi

hope they they used Zf parts and ZF lifeguard 6 Oil, some problems are when people use cheap Oil

putting ATF in the zf box, will cause no ends of problems

also when the gearbox is serviced the software so be checked its up to date, though I think 2009 was the latest update and the adaptations should be reset and a learn cycle should be done, if its not been done could be the issue

cheers

Joe

Thanks Peter and yes Joe I bought the sump with filter in it and oils my self and supplied them to the garage as didn't want that to be the case mate and had the gearbox put into learn mode again by a friend that has one of those machines and took for a drive with computer plugged in and watched it do all the gear changes and I wasn't noticing some of the gear changs

hi

Ive seen people fit a sonnax kit to the valve body which can cure similar problems, this fixes incorrect Oil pressures and theres loads of little valves it replaces

there also some sleeves and a spacers above the valve body that can split, but if its slipping could also be clutches friction plates, might be worth going to a gearbox specialist for advice first

if it were mine, id strip it and rebuild it, replace any thing that looks worn, change all the friction plates, fit a sonnax kit and possible a set of solenoids

if you got for a used gearbox, it will need programing to the car before it will start, as its coded to the car, TCM is internal the gearbox

cheers

Joe

So then on that note Joe are the solineds inside the gaer box and ate the friction plates hidden inside to cos if so it might be worth another gearbox and torque converter at the same time and then could it be reprogrammed on a snap on computer thing

Hi Steve,

I heard of Mackies some years ago.  I have never used them but they had a very good reputation by those that had,

They are based in Glasgow.

Regards,

Peter.

hi

yes solenoids and valve are easily accessed by dropping the sump, the valve body comes off complete, friction plates means gearbox has to come out

theres loads of video of the zf 6HP26 been stripped on youtube

you really need a runner if you buy a used box, so you can test drive it, otherwise you dont know what your buying

but I would say there is a abundance of 2.7 gearboxes about, as most get broken for engines for range rovers

cheers

Joe
