Water in spare wheel compartment

Can anyone help me with a query I have regarding a recent service my Jaguar xf just had. They told me the battery light had come on and that there was copious amounts of clean water in the spare wheel and battery compartment.  There are no holes and all the carpets are bone dry.  The car had been driven the day before and no battery light had come on or other issues. We are feeling suspicious and would like any advise or explanation. Many thanks Petra

This is a known problem with a couple of Jaguar models (I know of this in several XF and F Type).

My XF S had the same problem, Jaguar were very dismissive of the issue and put it down to a dodgy rubber seal although they never replaced or said what seal.

Hi

My car had this fixed before I bought it. Repair bill on mine was over £1K. I would advise taking it to a Jag specialist to replace the seal, having emptied the swimming pool in the boot. It is a well documented issue (just search on here) and any Jag Indy will be able to sort it. The problem is the computer modules in the spare wheel compartment getting water damaged. Hopefully you have caught yours in time and they just got splashed and will dry out. Once repaired it should be fine, but I keep several cloth bags of silica gel in mine now "just in case" but has been bone dry in my 3 years ownership. Fingers crossed for you.

What are slam vents?

They are valves to allow the excess air pressure inside the car to be released when you shut the boot. As you close the boot it tends to push air inside the vehicle raising the pressure and tending to prevent the boot fully closing.

Hi Big John, whereabouts are these vents to be found?.  I don't have water in the boot, but after heavy rain my hazards come on and refuse to turn off unless the ignition is turned off.

Hi

Good description or repair and images from JagInfo.com forum:

https://www.jaginfo.org/threads/fixing-the-water-in-the-boot-problem.21258/

Scroll through to post #3 and click on the image which should show some really good images of location. Not done it myself but apparently repair / replacement is possible from inside the car. If you do have a leak in the offside that is very close to a lot of electrics....

Apparently silicon sealant along the top of the light cluster where water runs down the gully from the roof alongside the tailgate can also help keep things dry inside.

Good luck

John
