Gearbox Oil Change

Hi, I've just had my gearbox 'megaflushed' and Oil change (130,000 Miles), and was told that the Oil was very dirty.

When I said I was following the recommended time (10 years or 150,000 miles), I was told to forget recommended time, all automatic gearboxes should have an Oil change at 60,000 miles, as he said, "you wouldn't leave your engine oil in that long".

Is this generally known, or am I playing catch-up as usual ?

Hi James,

Not sure about difficulty in changing Oil, probably quite strait forward.

But I always prefer to use a specialist who gives the system a good flush. But that's just me, plus the fact I get a written guarantee.

Regards

When you say "good flush" by a specialist what does that actually mean and what written guarantee do you get. Interested to know who/where this specialist is as I live in an adjoining County.

Many thanks and Regards, John

Hi John,

Quite a few video / guides on you Tube for the process. I saw a European one a year or two ago with some guys from ZF going through the work required but can't find it immediately to hand right now.

One can be found below. Temperatures for the second part of the fill up seem to be a common theme from what I can remember - along with cycling through gears at the right time to get all the fluid in!

The Jaguar guys I use in Somerset are based in Axbridge, just down from W-s-M. Swallows Jaguar https://swallows-jag.co.uk/ who advertise as being ZF Partners. They've always been ok with me, even advising me to put off work that could wait a year instead of fleecing me there and then like some others ...

Best regards,

Rich.

Thank you very much for the information. I did actually wonder if it were Swallows that you were talking of.

Regards and Best Wishes, John

Thank you for all of the helpful replies, I live in Leicestershire and my nearest independent Jaguar service place is JagTeck in Nottingham.

As my car has high-ish miles And I regularly tow at two ton caravan (with spirited driving thrown into the mix) I think it would be a worthwhile investment as I love car and have no intention of changing it any time soon.

Just as a ballpark figure, what sort of cost are you looking at approximately? I am assuming that the Oil and sump pain are going to be in the region of £200 plus VAT on their own and then you have the labour on top?

Hi James,

Swallows list the ZF Service for a 2.2d XF as £375.00 + VAT. I haven't had mine serviced by them but when I have had it carried out that would appear to be about the sort of price we get charged down in the South West ...

Hi  John, sorry for the delay in replying.

I've had Oil changes where they simply drain the Oil and then refill. This leaves me uneasy about any 'scrud' remaining.

So I use a company who drain the Oil and then blast a cleaning solution through the system to remove all the muck, check the 'box, then renew the oil.

And a one year guarantee against damage caused by work done. It's dearer than a strait oil change, but, to my mind, worth it. It takes about 4 hours,

Funnily enough, Gloucester is in the name of the company I use.

Regards

So the six speed is £390 all-in, with the new sump, Oil and labour and VAT. The eight speed is a little bit more expensive, I think they meant £20 or £40 more but not much. They recommended it was done at 100 K, as a bit of an unwritten rule because they are meant to be scared for life.

I have the dreaded cam belt change next year, I may ask them to do the gearbox at the same time as the car will probably be in mid 90,000 miles by then
