Spare wheel size

Quick question. Can I use a different size temporary spare wheel than the size of the normal tyres

I know the stock answer would normally be no, but the reason I ask is because my car has 19 inch wheels and I need to buy a spare as my car didn't come with one, but all the spares I've seen (those bright orange things) for sale seem to be 18 inch. 🤔

Gary, I personally believe you have answered your own question. You mention "a stock answer" and I feel you are correct. One odd sized wheel is surely going to upset the stability of the car.

HI Gary --I am with John on this I do not think its a good idea because if you had to put it on the drive axle ???

It would be 18 inch one side 19 inch the other side " NOT GOOD " ???

Yes, reason I'm asking is I read an article some time ago saying its perfectly fine as long as its temporary, and is the reason you're only supposed to use those  temporary spare wheels as a "Get me home" job for no more than 20 or so miles. I forget where I read it and  I know there's a lot of nonsense on the Internet, but I'm sure it was on a more respected site, either the RAC or a tyre manufacturers site, something like that.

I've also spoken to a Jag authorised repair centre since I posted this, and they said Jag don't do a 19" temp spare.

Isn't it possible that an 18" wheel could have a tyre with a deeper tyrewall to make up the difference?

Not my specialist subject obviously.

I have no idea what sizes these sort of tyres are manufactured in but personally I would have thought the selection of sizes would be somewhat restricted in comparison to normal full sized road tyres. I suppose the way would be to do a visual comparison to make certain you have a pair of wheels with the same diameter/height and rolling circumference. Other than that I would still be very sceptical about safety and any damage that might be done. E.G. to the differential unit.

Yes, I'll make further enquires although I have now seen a couple of 19" ones for sale. A bit more than I want to pay ideally and would prefer it to come with the tools. All I have is a bottle of glue/sealant, they even took the compressor to inflate it but I wouldn't be keen on using that anyway. As they're going on eBay for £160 upwards, it's not really surprising.

Worth noting I've never seen a 20" one.
