Would like some advice

Good evening all,

I would like some advice on my very new (to me) 2012 Jaguar XF 2.2 Premium Luxury I acquired just yesterday.

Firstly: Start/stop does not appear to function- the dashboard display says there is an error with this when pressing the start/stop button off and on. Would this be a battery issue, or something else?

Secondly: the air vent to the right of the steering wheel does not swivel open when starting the car/A/C. It can be manually opened, and does (with a little jolty movement) close automatically when the car is stopped. It's no huge issue, but obviously something I would like to correct if possible.

Finally: the car has 99,000 miles on the clock, and at ten years old I do believe it requires a cambelt change. Does anyone have any recommendations as to a reliable and affordable garage/dealership in the West Midlands, and what sort of price I would be looking at for this, and possibly also a decent service.

Thank you very much in advance, and I look forward to exploring the forum further.

Stop/start what is the message. These car need a healtly fully charged battery for stop/start to work.

There is a recent post if you do a search on the vents, from memory 1 of 2 parts will have fail and probably need replacing.

Sure someone will give you some garage recommendations in your area.

Welcome to the club/forum.

As for electrical/battery problems, these are Jaguars and you will soon grasp that they are charge hungry. Parasitic drain is very common and you will need to keep your battery in good condition and well charged. The popular piece of equipment is a CTEK MS 7 0r MS 10, Charger/Re-conditioner.  I put my S-Type on a CTEK MS 7 as often as I can and certainly at least once per month. It really does stop a lot of unnecessary yellow light and messages that are only generated because of low battery charge.  Well worth the investment and effort to keep battery in good condition and charge.

Best Wishes and Regards, John

Thank you, will take a look at replacing the parts that need doing. Also the battery issue, I think the battery was replaced (along with alternator) fairly recently, but may not be up to scratch.

Thank you John, really good advice there.  Would you recommend the 7 or the 10 other one another, or would both do a satisfactory job? Also, haven’t had a car needing its batteries charged before, does one need to remove the battery for charging? Thank you very much.

I bought a MS 7 because it can also be used as a tender to start a flat battery. I believe the MS 10 also has the same ability but is dearer than the MS 10. I also bought an adapter (again from CTEK) to install in the boot of my S-Type so as I do not need to keep connecting the CTEK to the battery. The battery connections are left permanently in place. CTEX have a good video on their own website and all of the products are listed and priced as well. No, you do not need to remove the battery. With the adapter CTEK have available it literally takes two minutes to connect and have the battery on charge. Well worth the investment in my opinion.

Best Wishes and Regards, John

Hi Charles,

With regard to the air vents, they operate via a small plastic clutch assembly which is a well known weak spot. You can buy the originals readilky enough at a Jaguar dealership but, better still, there is an enthusiast who manufactures an aftermarket item which fits peerfectly and is showing very good reliability.

Go to https://www.cs2000-z-tech.co.uk/ and navigate to XF modifications.

Fitting them is relatively straightforward and there are several illustrative videos on FB.

Personally, I have several spares in my bits box as they are cheap enough.
