Newbie owner - Ticking sound after switching off engine

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, please excuse any mistakes I make on the forum or about car related details as I’m a newbie.

I’ve recently picked up my first Jag, a 4.2L 2006 XK with 102k miles on it. I don’t know much about cars or mechanics but I absolutely love this car already and drive around with a huge grin.

However, I have noticed that after I switch off the car, I can hear this metallic pinging/clicking/tinkering sound from the car.

Is this a bad sign? And if so do I need to get something fixed? I’m a bit concerned and not sure what I should do about it. I’m not driving the car very hard and am just getting to grips with it, and I’d like to own it for as long as I can, so will do any repairs needed, can someone help me identify if there is anything I need to action? Thanks in advance everyone.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Modern Jaguar XK motoring. If you are concerned and don't know much about cars / mechanics, then you should seek out a good local garage who know about Jaguars and have them check the car over. As for your current question, it really depends how much the tinkling noises are. The engine is an aluminium unit and cool down noises are quite normal, but it is obviously very difficult to diagnose good noises from bad noises via a digital forum, hence the suggestion to build a rapport with a local garage you can trust.

Hi N6,

Thank you for the warm welcome, it feels good to join the community.

From what I gathered from research online, it might be the cool down noises as you mentioned, but with my lack of experience it’s hard to say. I think I’ll go ahead with the advice you have given, and take it to my local reputable garage. Thanks again!
