external temp sensor

Gents,

in an earlier post i had asked if anyone knew where the external sensor was for my X-type temperature reading ?

i had assumed it was the little black button up above the windscreen ?

mine is u/s so i wanted to know where it was located and where to get one from.

thousaands of you read the posting - none had any advice...

...yesterday i was re-reading the tech manual and was on the page for remote garage controls, whereby one can programme one's car to activate said gaarge or indeed any remote item, via the roof panel - if so fitted.

this was of no concern to me but there on the diagram, on the upper windscreen was the little black bug that looks my so-called outside air temp sensor, wwhen i found it is actually the rain/moisture sensor !!

so, to all of you who read but did not know, this could be the answer...to my auto wiper function - yes.

to my air temp problem - no.

i still can't find it.

two jag dealers do not have it in stock or ever will have as they don't know what i'm talking about.

so, does anybody know where this sensor is located (it displays the outside air temp on the dash screen) and where can i get one from ?

regards

rich

Hi Rich,

You should be able to source the Ambient Air Sensor from a Dealer or eBay, alternatively you could try SNG Barrett - google the name and you'll find their website.

The sensor can be found under the nearside front bumper, it looks the same as the one fitted to my S-Type.  If you have a look at the following link - it will take you to a different forum but gives you the complete "How To"

Best regards,

Dave

Hi I had an issue with the air con on my s type and got it replaced at Stratstone's in Birmingham, If I had known the cost of buying one and how easy it was to fit I could have saved over £100.00..... you live and learn.

Firstly, a big thank you to dave and Old bear for putting me on the right track.

as they said the sensor is located at the front, on the RH side looking at the car from the front, behind the lower grill.

you will need a 7/8mm socket and long extension.

you will need a light source to properly see this bracket.

remove the black plastic bracket that also holds a hot water pipe, but also acts as a clip for the sensor.

it is all located behind the grill, so unless you want to remove the complete grill, remove this clip/bracket only.

this will give you access to the assembly which can be pulled through the grill.

it is better if you have three hands as you need one to support the assembly, and two to hold the bracket aand lever the sensor out. DO NOT BREAK OFF THE DELICATE PLASTIC LUGS THAT HOLD IT IN PLACE !!

this is why you need 3 hands.

once you have  removed it from its lugs, prise the two halves apart.

the pins will be covered in road grunge hence the tightness of the fit.

exchange parts and re-assemble. i found it easier to re-attach the bracket to the car then clip in the pipe afterwards.

job done = £20 off eBay and 10 mins work, saving you hundreds over a jag dealer.

good luck, and thanks guys.

Rich
