manual S-types

Not a current Jag owner, but hoping to buy a facelift S-type in the future, perhaps early next year.

Everything I have read on this forum elsewhere is telling me to avoid the automatic box, even the 6-speed ZF box in the newer cars. Tradition market wisdom says that Jags are "best" with an automatic, but I think a manual would suit the sportier image of the S-type.

Does anyone on here run a manual S-type? How do you find it? Ideally I'd like to find a 3.0 manual in a dark metallic colour, with sport spec, but appreciate that it would take a long time to find a car if I was being that fussy!

I ve recently bought a "t" reg 99 s type manual as my auto died due to gearbox faultz and after having it rebuilt originally at a coct of over £600 decided to give a manual vrrsion a go

So far haven t looked back the car is still a pleasure to drive and even returns better fuel figures with a sports air filter fitted than the the auto did. Wiuld recomend the manual to everyone but get the highest spec you can as the majority are a low sport spec. Not the se and do not have all the bells and whistles

I bought my 1st S Type and in fact my first Jaguar,a 2.5 manual petrol V6 on a 03 plate earlier this year. I went for a manual over an automatic as i prefer to drive a car! And i can assure you its a pleasure to drive through the gears. Getting some pretty reasonable MPG out of it too, something that you have more control over in a manual than an auto.

My only advice is take a while to trawl the market and test drive as many as you can before taking the plunge, thats what i did and are now reaping the rewards. Good luck :D

Recently got a dark green 55 manual 2.7 twin turbo diesel. Not the se but not bothered about those extras.. always prefer to drive a car as oppose to driving a chariot. ;-)

I decide when it changes gear.. recenlty did 120 miles and got 58 miles to gallon average.. 6th gear is a god send.

still loving it too.. hope this helps.

So, S-type R, Supercharged 4.2 V8, 400BHP, 0-60 in 5.3secs, limited to 155 mph and only available as an auto, not a drivers car then?

Hi Phil, the petrol isn't nearly as bad as you think, I'll admit mine is only a V8 but on long runs it gets well into the mid 30s and there's a 59k mile S-type R on Autotrader for less than £8k.

Go on you know you want to  :D
