Engine Malfunction light.

This morning the amber light came on indicating an engine malfunction.  I have booked my S type diesel into a local Jaguar dealer to find the problem.  The biggest problem is £69 for half an hour!

The car is running beautifully and all seems well otherwise.

Hi Peter

have you considered buying a code reader to scan the electronics yourself.

Here is quite a good little scanner on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221252642417?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

Once you've got a fault code from the ECM then you can post it up here to get some advice.

Thanks, Trevor, that's a thought.

It was the EGR valve, but the technician did say that the light will probably go off. It did on the 12 mile drive back from the dealer.

So now it is wait and see.

The mechanic who has been doing all my servicing for the last 12 years might have a reader, but I couldn't get hold of him today.

Peter.

I have found the connection point -- easy on an S Type.  I just hope that I never get any malfunction lights on for a while, as the engine has only done 31k miles.

I had new Jaguar genuine mud flaps/splash guards fitted yesterday bought from DMG who are quite near and which were £7 cheaper than the local Jaguar dealer, who  also quoted £69 to fit them.  My mechanic charged £20 and he came here to do the job!

Misfire  ---  Fuel --- Comprehensive Component Monitors --    ----------- and probably more etc etc that I can't guess at,

I got this information from downloading and printing off the disc that came with the scan tool.

I am uncertain what to do, other than erasing the scan history.

I will have a look round the internet to see what I can find.

Hi Stan...and welcome back !

As Peter says...it sounds like an EVAP problem, albeit probably only a temporary glitch.

If you have a code (such as P0123) I can narrow down a little bit more, but otherwise if you clear memory and switch lamp off then it should take care of the problem.

The following is a forum link to Technical Abbreviations used in modern vehicles if it helps.

Just erased all readings and engine light came on again. Removed MAF body and air filter, sprayed MAF body with carb cleaner re assembled did another check and nothing, no fault codes or warning lights.  One thing that does concern me is the fact that engine goes ok but will not rev over about 3000rpm.

Hi Stan.  The petrol engines [2.5L and 3.0L] should rev up to about 6.500 rpm so it looks to me as if the computer is overruling the throttle and running in limp home mode.

I am no expert in these wonderful systems, [i knew a bit about the old side valves] so it might be a job for a friendly mechanic.  I was just a humble steelworker whose answer to most things was a lump hammer.

As Peter says...a lump hammer is sometimes the only course of action, lol

If the engine is restricted to a certain RPM and the engine lamp is on then it is probably in limp home mode for a particular reason.

However the throttle housing area does tend to gung up with carbon and a good clean should improve things.

Also, pay attention to the electrical connections...make sure they are clean and connecting well.

I has a similar problem. Engine malfunction light on but no performance issues. All fluid levels correct. I connected my ELM327 with iPhone Ap - Dash Command Wi-Fi. It came up with a gear selection fault. Cleared code, no further issues. It would appear that any momentary problem is recorded and easily cleared by any code reader. Hope this helps.
