Turbo Intercooler problems on XF

I have just had to have my one month old Jaguar XF 300t Portfolio recovered for what seems to be the same problem as referred to here. Only 1500 miles on the clock. The roadside assistance engineer and and service manager at the garage said that they had never heard of this problem before - which doesn't seem likely given the comments. Is this still an ongoing problem with Jaguar XF? I have had 3 others with no issues.

Hi All, I am new to the club, I have had the XF for a few years now and still love it, although it seems to eat tyres and brakes for breakfast.  Seems like my XF S has developed the same issue over this past weekend @110000miles, first "Restricted Performance" and then on a subsequent journey the pop sound, with the outlet side of the intercooler seam blown apart.  Hoping this is the only issue, faults logged P006a & P1247. Any recommendations of a redesigned replacement intercooler?

This is my post from 2014 .The UPDATE is that mine is still going strong with no problems in the last 5 years .Swapping the bust one out was relatively easy.Once i was reconciled to removing the water radiator .If i remember right the hose connections are easy to disconnect/reconnect .What is the price now for an inter-cooler ?.I bought my Jag and parts from Lancaster Jag in Reading

My Jag is a 59 plate S and the inter=cooler was slightly modified as i mentioned.

Thanks for the try.I have just bought and fitted a new one from Jaguar dealers .part number jc2z 11675 for £196.59 plus VAT (£236).

The only difference was on the inter-cooler inlet side and not on the outlet which was the side that bust.When buying i bought a new inlet gasket  as advised but they forgot to sell me the 2 new M6 bolts and nuts required for the inlet chamber (40 mm  long) .The new inter-cooler does NOT have any captive nuts .

Just waiting to buy some new antifreeze but  shopping around as Halfords want about £60 for the 12.5 Litres .Can anyone recomend a cheaper supplier ?

Also have had to change the drivers side window regulator JC2Z 26989 £113.47 plus VAT (136) but i'll look on other forums to see if this again is a common problem

PS will you swap it out yourself ? I am not a mechanic  and i managed it over 2 days with going to work as well in the wife's car.  I used 2 Axel stands on the front .The hardest part for me was removing the bottom shield as there are several screws that are quite a ways back from the cars front .

Just changed the washer pump behind the front rhs wheel for £8 (ebay) so if your having the wheel off you may want to swap this pump as well ,my jag has 58,000 miles

Thanks for your response Peter, and glad to hear your intercooler is still going strong.

So the Jag dealer cost for the new intercooler is now £350+VAT for retail, all local Dealers to us are the same price.  Guy Salmon Ascot offering the best trade discount.  Any other OEM replacements for approx same cost are out of stock, with only a Nissens intercooler being available for £500, so I am obviously going with the Jag part.  Unfortunately I am not tackling it myself as I don't have ramps/axle stands and I thought I might potentially have other issues so arranged with a Mechanic to do the work as I know and trust him, although I am fairly handy but I am also aware a little knowledge can be dangerous.

Good tip re the fixings, I will mention it.

Hopefully this will be the last bill this year, as I had a major service and timing belt changed in February, plus a couple of tyres.

I have noticed my drivers window is now quite slow, was that the symptoms before you replaced yours?

I will also replace the springs on the boot as I believe that is the cause for it not to open fully when pressing the keyfob button, but need to scour the forums if its just the springs or also the hydraulic rams.

My windows became slow but worked for a time ( say 6 months ) then winter hit and they stopped working altogether.I changed mine following youtude video and the push cables were corroded .I think the new ones from Jag cost me £117 but that was several years ago .They took about 1.5 hours for the first one and about 45 mins for the second AND they are still working fine .

Just curious as to why people would think that because half a dozen people have reported a fault in a forum, that it would be a common problem? 

Turbos and intercooler issues are relatively common faults on many cars, I've had issues on the last three I've had, but after reading this thread I asked at the garage where I had the wheels refurbed recently if this was a common fault and they said they've never had a Jag in with this problem. They're Jag approved and get lot of high end cars in so it's not like they don't see lot of cars with turbos, so if you haven't had this issue I wouldn't worry too much. 

Anyway, main reason I posted is that the eBay link somebody posted earlier in the thread now shows an intercooler for sale for under £75,  not sure if it's the same model or not.

I can assure you that XF intercoolers are a very common failure. The plastic tank come apart from the cooler core.  I had this problem on my 2009 XF and there are numerous examples of it being talked about on Forums & Facebook groups.

Hi all

Reading through all the post, I can clearly see that Jaguar have a problem with the intercooler. the problem I had with my 2011 Jaguar XJ (which I love) is that I had a new intercooler fir in May 2021 and in December 2021 it went POP again costing me £700 notes(local garage). I rang Jaguar customer care team who advised me that I need to book it into a jaguar dealership to approve the faulty part. 

This would cost £190, which would be non refundable even if the dealership agreed it was faulty, so I contacted the CEO of Jaguar as I was really disappointed with the response, and one of his team contacted me and he would not swerve from the Jaguar stance of booking it in, even though I have the faulty part.

I have the part in the back of my car and being a design engineer it is clearly a design fault. 

Its a real shame as I love the car, but with the customer care response and the reliability of this part going I would stay well clear of Jaguars in future - shame on you Jaguar.

this is the first car I have had an intercooler issue.

All cars have there weak points and faults, some more costly than  others, look at the original boxster issue, why they are so cheap now. Mercedes cars of the late 90s, rust buckets etc etc

Hopefully someone will develop an aftermarket solution for the intercooler so if they do go they can be replaced with a better solution.
