Vibration at low speed and low gear

Hello all

A newbie to Jaguar OC.

I have a 2007 S Type diesel with 53,000 miles on the clock.

Most of the time the drive is very smooth except when moving slowly (traffic). At about 1500 rpm and 30 mph there is a noticeable vibration from the drivetrain. It goes as soon as my foot lifts off the accelerator.

Under power there is no vibration, goes like the wind and all gears change as they should.

Your ideas will be much appreciated.

Thank you

Stewart in Northumberland

Welcome to the Club, Stewart.

I have a similar model to you with the same mileage on the clock, but I have not noticed that problem.

The only thing I can think of is something loose such as the exhaust, or something similar.

Regards,

Peter.

Looks good, Trevor.

I have been to the funeral of an old friend  [Lord Bilston] today and there were quite a few XJs there.  Radiance Red looks very nice in the sun.  The cars mostly belonged to MPs and Members of the House of Lords ---  they do like Jaguars.

Regards

Peter.

  • 3 weeks later...

I have had my S Type about 2 weeks now and am very happy with it bit it too has started with this vibration at low speeds. It's as if the auto gearbox is hunting for a gear, if I manually select a higher gear the car is as smooth as ever. The only thing I can find is to have the gearbox serviced and a change of Oil, has anyone had this done and did it do the trick.

I have been recommended Elite and performance Jags in Derby so I think I will give them a call.

Hi Martin,

My last Jaguar was a 2.5 AWD petrol, with a manual gearbox, which I had to get used to after 11 years driving an automatic.  On the odd occasions I didn't change down at the right time I got a similar vibration at lower speeds   ----  the car was telling me it was in the wrong gear.

It sounds as if you have got the same  problem coming from the opposite direction.

The automatic gearbox is allegedly sealed for life but many owners, more expert than myself, have found that a change of Oil at about 60k has worked wonders and given them a bit more reace of mind.

The 6 speed auto is a very good gearbox and worth looking after.

Regards,

Peter.

Hi all.

Thanks for the swift responses, after writing the above I found an American site discussing the benefits of an auto box service and although the unit is supposed to be sealed for life they have then had excellent service from the 'box afterwards.

They do hint though that if the ATF heat exchanger is perforated and Glycol from the coolant is getting into the 'box then that will have to be replaced first and hopefully it has not damaged any seals in the auto 'box before it is changed.

I'm thinking I will have to get mine checked out properly!

Thanks all

Martin
