hi i posted this subject to see what other jag drivers thing about the daytime running lights.my first experience of driving was with moter bikes was when driving during the day to drive the bike with the lights on so that you can be seen. bikers call it the arsole factor as they say which is true that  all moter ists are arseholes. whom have no conssideration for other road users, in many a case to be true as we all see in a day to day experience. todays modern cars are fitted with daytime running lights i call them fairy lights. and wee see all types ect. to me its a money grabbing exercise . it seems that every 2yrs they change and you fell out of place if you havnt got the latest model. welcome your views

They're a bizarre waste of time. They're on in good visibility conditions but in poor conditions, should be off as headlights are a requirement of the Highway Code. My car turns headlights on in dim light or when wipers are operating; all perfectly adequate and ultimately the driver should be responsible for safe operation.

Why don't the rear lights operate with driving lights? Those who think just using then in poor conditions are a real danger.

These lights can dazzle other motorists in good visibility condition.  I also keep the auto setting on and as soon as it is dim on come the dipped headlights.

In foggy conditions when there is some brightness above the fog, I am inclined to switch off auto and use manual with the rear fog lamp on.

Front fog/driving light were discontinued on the S Type in 2007  ----  possibly because they were too bright and some drivers used them in daylight.

I also am inclined to agree with Paul.

Hope you enjoy the East Midlands, Trevor.

Not really North, though.   North is when you hear the word "Turnip" for what the South call "Swede", and when you hear the chat up line "What do you think of Hammonds Pies, then?"

Regards,

Peter.

I disagree with you Trevor, North is  North of Doncaster. always has been, and to a true Yorkie always will be. So There. !!!!!!

And Twerk is what Yorkshire men go to every morning.

Stan,

As a general rule "North" is north of the Thames, or the M 25, when the boundries are redrawn later in the year it will be north of the River Avon. You are probably right about "Twerk" though

P.S., was up North in Leicester week before last to see some music, cracking football ground, was well impressed !

Up norf is Newcastle and the wilds of Scotland., except when I'm in London when border shifts to the M25.

As for daylight running lights - I quite like mine. You guys probably know what you're doing but the average donut doesn't drive a car. They're merely slightly involved passengers who are actually busy planning a shopping trip or doing work. For these people, reduced visibility is not a concept they're familiar with. Auto headlights are fine but don't cater for mist and haze. I for one find I can see these 'people' coming much more easily if their kias and Toyotas have DRLs.

Julian,

Although you probably need headlights on all the time up norf as it only gets light for a bout twenty minutes a year ,I agree with your sentiments on daylight running lights and lighting in general.

That is one drawback with auto headlights , the mist and fog .

I now have an XKR, and to enable  daylight running lights you have to turn the rotary control from "Auto" to "off" to make them switch on automatically . You would think they would come on with the control set to "Auto"

Hi Julian,

My S Type does not have daytime running lights, but in mist spray and light fog I am aware that you need to be seen.  I switch off auto and put on my dipped headlights.

You would be surprised at the number of people who think that if they can see the car in front when giving a 10 yards gap, that they can be seen from 70 yards away.

Us people originating from the wild uncultured north are less wild and more cultured than many people think.
