Weekend in the Garage with my XKR!

Recommended Posts

So, its been a car related weekend so far and I have done the following to our '00 XKR

  • Full set of plugs and inspected coil packs,
  • Cleaned MAF,
  • Pagid front discs, pads and a full system bleed,
  • Fitted replacement sports rear pipes (to replace the rear boxes)

All went well and the plugs looked as if they have never been changed! - had an intermittent 'restricted performance' warning, the plugs seemed to have sorted this, fingers crossed.

New front brakes are massively better as one dis had a slight warp that caused the steering wheel to wobble dramatically at speed, much better!

I bought the new rear exhaust pipes as the old girl was so quiet, not a hint of V8 lovelyness and having had 'fruity' pipes on our previous sports cars, the wife was grumbling.

Fitting took 30 mins on the floor ramps to fit and what a difference! -  Lovely rumble on tick-over but amazingly only a tad louder inside, no resonance at all and sounds awesome if you get a shift on. Best of both worlds and well worth £120 from a chap on eBay (without tail finishers so I used mine)

Pics to follow tomorrow....

Now I just need to work out how to get the '01 leather interior to work with my '00 loom!

Took the car out for a run, simply fantastic, I love the old thing!

Working on cars these days is a bit more fun than when I had to do it as a job!

  • 4 weeks later...

Mathew,

Quick question, I don't want to get to it, but where is the battery on the XKR please?

ATB,

Trevor

It's in the same location as the S Type, Trevor.  In the boot, on the right hand side.

Peter,

Thank you. Another quick question if you don't mind . Had a letter from the stealership today where I bought the car . They claimed under the terms of the warranty the car has to be serviced by a Jaguar dealer, is this correct ? I was always led to believe that as long as it was at a VAT registered garage and genuine Jaguar parts were used, the warranty was still valid.

This is taken from a letter sent by Jaguar in regard to an extra Free MOT warranty on the car (under the Servicing and Service Records clause) .

" A Jaguar dealer or a VAT registered garage should carry out the servicing, and receipts retained as Jaguar Approved Warranty
Administration are entitled to check the service recording the event of a claim."

Do you think the stealership are just trying it on?

ATB,

Trevor

P.S. I have since found this: http://www.accukltd.co.uk/right-to-choose

Hi Trevor,

I have heard that as well, but it has been in cars that have long warranties -- usually those makes that offer 7 year warranties.  How many years have Jaguar given you?

Or I wonder if the letter was written due to your mentioning that you are not having it serviced there.

It might well be worth writing a letter to Jaguar.

I am going to root out my Jaguar Warranty handbook and brush up my little knowledge of contract law.

Regards,

Peter.

Peter,

I've been given until the vehicle is three years old (November 2015), plus some extra warranty when the first MOT is due . It is understandable with companies like Kia who give 7 year warranties , and also Audi will not buy back any car that has not been serviced by them .

I think these people need to be taken outside  and be given a beating by e herd of dwarves !

The wife reckons I'm just becoming a grumpy old man, but I think for the amount of money I've paid them (by instant bank transfer on all five dealings) I have every right to stand up for myself ; or do they own me now?

ATB,

Trevor

Hi Trevor,

You have about 18 months to go.

My Jaguar Warranty handbook does not mention the compulsory maintenance by a Jaguar Main dealer, but stipulates a VAT registered garage and use Jaguar parts.

The Sale of Goods act of 1979 comes into play if the car is faulty in any way, but that would have come to light by now, anyway.

I have wandered around contract law and the majority conclusion is that if you have your car maintained by a VAT registered garage and the maintenance schedule is followed using genuine Jaguar parts/recommended oils etc, then the warranty remains valid.  This will have to be shown in the service book. I would reply to your dealer and tell them that they are wrong.

And if your wife thinks you are turning into a grumpy old man, she should have words with my wife about what grumpy old men are like.

Regards,

Peter.
