  1. Hi everyone, I have a 1996 XJ6 (4 ltr ). She has just been serviced and MOT'd at 127000 miles (up to date service history by jag specialists). There were a few advisories - mostly a bit cosmetic. However there is a bit of welding to do - nothing dire (about £200) and the drive shaft seal is leaking. Unfortunately parts for this year and model are hard to come by (interior lights, engine bits etc.). I have posted a photo of her nice and clean in all her glory. My quandary is..... I have yet to get the cost for replacing the drive shaft but I don't think it will be cheap. As much as I love the car and some of the quirky bits associated with a car that's 20 years old sooner or later I need to draw the line at whether to continue spending money on her (that is likely I would not get back). I think she is too good to scrap but may suit an enthusiast. If I were to advertise her as is would anyone know what I should be realistically asking - I could get all the bits done (subject to definite sale) and then sell but I would be looking to recoup the outlay. When I have mentioned selling I seem to get questions on MPG, how much is road tax etc. In honesty - if people are asking those questions they shouldn't be looking for a Jag. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks - Richard
  2. Hi Matthew Indeed with jags there are a few possibilities to symptoms of similar characteristics - however in defence of these wonderful cars and the age yours a 97 and mine a 96 I have known of newer and allegedly more prestigious vehicles being an absolute nightmare in terms of reliability. The only other odd thing that happened to mine was that it stuck in gear (2nd) - obviously feared the worst of a new gearbox - the cost of which would outweigh the value of the car. It happens that there is a sensor on the gearbox itself (somewhere) which gets dirty etc. and causes a bad connection and hence a fault. No new parts just cleaning the sensor and contacts remedied the issue. Just thought I'd let you know
  3. Independent Jag Specialists -Berkshire Area - (Taplow - Nr Maidenhead) Powerbell Garage, Marshgate Trading Estate Hitcham Road Taplow, Maidenhead Berkshire SL6 0LX These guy's are top notch and work on ALL Jaguars (seen some superb classics in there)
  4. Hi Simon, Indeed you have a smart looking X300 - Looks pretty well mint. I would be interested know if you got wheels sorted. Mine is an XJ6 - 4 Litre - 20 years old and 127,000 miles. She has the odd little dink (due to inconsiderate others bashing her with their doors !!!) The wheels are the originals but the lacquer has peeled. Just had a full service and had the AC Belt and fan belt changed. Also the rear bushes were replaced (I was hearing a noise that sounded like the cover over the spare wheel - part of the boot floor was rattling). She drives so smoothly now. Just a word of caution if you didn't already know - make sure the fuel filler area under the flap is free from grit and leaves and water is free to drain - otherwise the tank fills with water !!. Rodding the drain with flexible curtain wire does the job.
  5. Hi James - Lexus is a good choice. However wish I had joined sooner. The items I listed in my response are all that I have really spent money on - Not bad I think Considering she is 20 years old. Not wishing to sound generic as such ( I appreciate what you mean about media statements) If you do consider buying a jag in the future - definitely go for service history by a jaguar specialist (not necessarily a jag dealer) at least it would prove that the current owner has genuinely looked after the car. mine has been looked after by Powerbell of Taplow in Berkshire for the last 16 years All the very best Richard
  6. Gentlemen - Thank you for your support
  7. A bit after the event I'm afraid but I have just joined. I had a similar problem with my XJ6 4 ltr. The engine would cut out coming up to junctions etc. but there were no warning lights displayed - so was a bit mystified. Managed to get the car over to the guys who service the car. They took one look at the battery - and that was the answer (cheap and cheerful from Halfords). I Changed the battery to a proper brand (rechargeable) and she's been as good as gold ever since. Just proves you get what you pay for.
  8. Just joined. Have an XJ6 - 4 Litre 2nd owner for the last 15 years. Always wanted a jag since a young boy & she's been a pleasure to drive. I think I've looked after her pretty well. Alloys could do with re-dressing and there is a small rust spot on one of the wheel arches.
  9. Hi James Not sure about the replies you have received (can't see them) - I joined today. I have a 1996 XJ6 4 Litre. I am the 2nd owner of about 15 years In that time - Other than exhausts and wear and tear items - she has been pretty much trouble free. Recently serviced at 127,000 miles. The only bits that have failed have only been recently - Roof lining sag (quite common apparently) renewed was £300 Rear Bushes Interior light module (Driver / Passenger) not replaced yet Some parts are hard to get not of but not impossible. Like all things - if a jag has been looked after they can be a good buy (like driving around in your lounge !!) A word of caution - always make sure that the drain from the petrol filler area is clear of grit etc. or rainwater collects and fills the fuel tank with water £450 to drain !!. Flexible net curtain wire does the job. Not sure what they are worth these days - Perhaps some of the members could help ? it would help me too as I will be looking to part with mine.
