  1. Hi Steven I have owned two X-Types and two S-Types, and on the last X-Type (2.1 FWD 2002) the car left me high and dry going into limp mode on the way back from Cornwall. That fault came down to two exhaust sensors, one I seem to remember being difficult to get to and labour intensive to replace. My local garage did it for me, costs were in the region of £450 if I remember correctly. Most garages will be able to diagnose the issue without too much of a problem. Mark.
  2. Hi Alex, I had a 3 Litre 2000 model until I traded it last year, and had a similar problem with mine affecting eventually the F/N/S, R/N/S, and R/O/S locks. The problems initially started when the car just refused to lock either by fob or key in the lock. Eventually, I found the doors would lock but the rear doors would refuse to open, then would, then wouldn't. It turned out that the electrical mechanisms in all the doors (except Driver's) needed replacing. From memory these are really expensive, over a hundred a throw, and so I took pot luck from ebay and bought second-hand from scrappies. Luckily all but one worked well, and I replaced that, again with a pot luck ebay find. Thereafter it was fine for the two years I had it before replacing the car. It's a fiddly job so I got my local garage to do it, he charged an hours labour for all the doors. It might not be in anyway connected to your issue but may be worth looking at. Mark
  3. Hi All, A real grateful thank you for the advice and as promised, an update. I couldn't get to the plug on the box so I took it to a mechanic I've used over the last couple of years. He reported that the box was practically bone dry and so he topped it up, charging me nothing into the bargain. At first I only saw a small improvement but after a couple of days and over a hundred miles or so later, it's really very much better. I would say a vast 80% if I was to put some sort of figure on it. The gears are now changeable with ease and the vibration almost gone. I'm tempting fate but I'm hoping that there's no lasting damage. Just wanted to reiterate my thanks to all that contributed, well worth the subscription. Mark

  5. Hi All, Some advice is required from those experienced S-Type owners out there. I recently traded in my 3.0L auto and bought a 2005 2.5L manual sport. A lovely car having only covered 88,000, I did notice that changing gear was a little notchy, but nothing to worry about or so I thought. Over the last month the issue has got worse where putting into first is difficult but still manageable, and changing up or down has now also become less smooth as it should be. The biting point of the clutch is quite high and I assume that it will have to be changed in about 5000 or so. There is also an almost unnoticeable vibration of the gearstick which on reflection may also be symptomatic of something ..but what ?. Do these issues ring a bell with anybody and might have an idea what the issue is and how much to put right ? All the best, Mark.

  9. Hi Mike and welcome. I also had two X-Types. A 51 and 52 plated 2.5 and like yours a 2.1. A great model of car that still looks fresh now. I echo the sills warning and watch the exhaust sensors. Mark
  10. Hi All, This is the first time that I have joined a Jaguar themed club, despite now being on car number four. I started in 2003 with a 2.5 X-Type, followed by a lovely but rather elderly 3.0 litre S-Type auto, a basic 2.1 X-Type, and now I've just bought a nice 2005 S-Type. I'm working my way through little faults but overall a fine car. So yes I've had experience of the usual issues with jamming door locks, iffy coils, and vulnerable brake pipes on the S-Type, through to dodgy alarms and numerous costly sensors going belly up on the X-Type. However, I have to say that despite all that I love the smaller cars and can just about keep my latest on the road. As I get time I hope to contribute a bit now and then on the forum.
