  1. I had this problem on my xj8 (battery is in boot/trunk) when the key for the boot/trunk release did not work. Some told me to drill a hole in a specific place on the rear panel and poke around with a screw driver to release the catch. However you do not need to do this at all. The key will open the drivers door and then you can open the bonnet (hood). Connect a car battery negative earth cable to top of suspension strut (earth) and the positive to the junction of positive cable on right side of engine bay. (It is usually covered by a rubber cover) You can then use remote or key to unlock all doors and boot (trunk).
