  1. How Serious is the Code?

The problems stemming from a P0781 OBD2 trouble code typically start out small, then they can escalate very quickly as the damage progresses.

    Symptoms

    Symptoms of a P0781 include:

    • Check engine light
    • Hard or erratic shifts
    • Slipping between 1st and 2nd gears
    • Complete failure to complete the 1-2 shift
    • Reduced fuel economy
    • Overheating
    • Limp Mode

    Causes

    • Low transmission fluid
    • Dirty transmission fluid / filter
    • Frayed wiring / damaged connectors
    • Failed 1-2 shift solenoid
    • Failed transmission pump
    • Pressure blockage
    • Valve body issue
    • TCM or ECU failure

  2. In my opinion you could, for that money, do better than a Luxury model. Search a little harder and find at least a Premium Luxury model or even the Portfolio. A later model would also be better and if you can stretch to it get a face lift model as the software and displays are far better. Good ones are about and going cheap, between 5-10k.

I know this is slightly over your budget but you wont regret it.

  3. James,

From my experience when my rear light cluster became unserviceable due to water ingress due to a failed seal.

I was informed that as the unit is supplied and fitted as a sealed non user serviceable unit then the only option is to buy (I was covered under warranty as there was no evidence of cracks etc) and fit a complete unit. This was done at a main dealer under warranty but it would not have been a cheap (in the region of £250-300) part.

Sorry for the dour reply. Maybe you could get the parts required from a breakers?

    Cheers,

  4. I actually owned a 2012 XF S and was mightily impressed. A great car and very reliable.

The only thing that let me down was the butterfly valve which controls the change over from low to high pressure turbo. An upgrade from Jaguar is available as the pin is known to corrode. A very easy fix and a cheap’ish part. It can be changed by a home mechanic or an independent garage. I had mine done at a main dealer so paid a bit more.

Also check all Brake discs as these take some punishment and are not the best.

Apart from that and as long as it has had its regular maintenance you should be ok.

    Enjoy the performance!

  5. Hi,

I had the same happen to my 62 plate XF S, the water was so deep I was bailing out for ages. Luckily I suffered no damage. I have a friend who has an F Type and had a similar issue. It affected his electrics and cost him thousands to repair. Jaguar did offer a goodwill payment to help but it was still very costly.

Apparently its to do with a design fault in the ducting/venting in the wheel arches and underneath (???).

Allegedly JLR are aware but keep it very quite.....

  6. Tom,

I had for many years a service plan for my Jags and swore by them as it spread the costs over the year so did not get a big bill once a year. However, when I changed main dealer I was persuaded to go for Fixed Price Servicing (by the sealer) as it worked out much cheaper for the same thing.

I now do the Fixed Price servicing, yes I have a bill in one hit but at less cost.

Worth chatting to your main dealer. Hope this helps.

  7. Hi All,

My 2016 XJ Portfolio has an issue with the virtual dash displaying the SatNav, in short it doesn’t.

The car has been with my local Jaguar dealership for over 2 weeks and they have, today, called to say they can not diagnose the fault and have given up. They have had continuous dialogue with Jaguar for Technical Assistance but to no avail. They are saying that they would need to start changing components with a ‘donor’ car and that will cost thousands......

Does anyone have any suggestions at all??

    Many thanks,

    Clive
