  1. Earlier this year I bought a really nice X Type Sport Premium estate, 2005 with 112K miles and I love the car to bits. The seller advised me of a problem starting the car when hot - it would take a while to fire and then default to recovery mode for around 5 - 10 seconds, but after that run perfectly. I was told of a software upgrade available that would cure it for a modest cost. A treatment of Terra Clean improved things a great deal, but then it came back. So, off I trotted to a Jaguar dealer who had the car over night, didn't perform the upgrade and returned it back to me saying the fault was due to an intermittent break down on the wiring when hot. They couldn't say where the fault was located, so couldn't give a price to fix it, other than to say for every hour they spent on it, they would relieve me of £144.00 of my English pounds. Obviously this was not a sensible option, as giving people blank cheques can be a ruinous experience. I seriously considered selling the car as I felt ripped off by Jaguar - they charged me an hours labour just to tell me they didn't know what the problem was. I decided to try an find a good independent and a google search revealed a company in Corley, CFS Motors, who presented themselves as Jaguar specialists, with a number of ex-Jaguar technicians on staff. I booked the car in and delivered it on Friday evening. They lent me a nice X Type to get home in - they're well off the bus route and you need a sat nav to find them. But they were absolutely BRILLIANT! I got a phone call Friday evening to say they had found a split pipe and should they repair it. I also got them to change the power steering belt and on Saturday lunch time I collected my car, all fixed and ready to go and it was perfect. That was about 2 months ago. I held off posting to make sure everything stayed ok. Guess what - no more hot starting problems and this is the best bit, the total bill, including the software upgrade, the power steering belt and the replacement pipe came to £190.00, including VAT. The dealer wanted £126.00 just to change the belt. Chris, who owns the business is a diamond. Today I called in to get a replacement mirror glass for my shattered drivers door mirror - £20.00 supplied and fitted while I waited. So now I can keep my Jag, safe in the knowledge that there are a bunch of guys near Coventry who really know their stuff and charge reasonable prices for it. Can I say I have no commercial link to this company, other than being an extremely satisfied customer. The number is 01676 541917 or you can google their web site. A very big thank you guys and I'll be bringing the car to you in the new year for its next service. Phil
  2. I love my X-Type estate to bits, but one thing I'm going to have to get sorted out is the headlights. Coming home late I was shocked just how poor they were. Even on main beam they were not as good as my old ZT on dipped. I would welcome any thoughts as to what the problem may be or what I could do to improve them. It's a 2005 diesel if that makes any difference. Many thanks, Phil
  3. Hi Peter, Well the good news is that the Terraclean process seems to have cured the hot start issue (keeping fingers crossed as I say it - not easy when you're trying to type!). When hot, it starts normally now and achieves normal revs straight away and the engine management light goes out. I've just done a run up to Derby this evening and the fuel consumption is improving mile on mile, so am I a happy bunny? You betcha! I'm booking it in for service next week - just bought a genuine major service kit off fleabay for £54.00, so that's the next step. After which I think I'll go for the second Terraclean which should get the car nicely set up for a bit of tuning later in the year. The guy's that did mine are Spanners Auto Centre, Station Road, Coleshill. Nice lads, they even picked up and fixed a fuel leak on a pipe to one of the injectors whilst they had it. Looking forward to hearing how you get on with your S Type Peter - please let me know. Best wishes Phil
  4. I've only owned my X Type for a couple of weeks - it's a 2005 Sport Premium 2.0D Estate - and I'm still getting used to it. I'm still getting used to the wonderful feeling of looking out of the window and seeing a Jaguar parked on my drive; I'm still getting used to the reaction from other people who see it and immediately fall in love with it; I'm still getting used to the lovely smell of the leather sport perforated seats and the fantastic way it drives and handles. I love the car to bits already, but do you know what I love the most? The fact that it isn't a BMW, an Audi or a Mercedes. Oh and I really love the courtesy extended by many other road users because Jaguar seems to have massive kudos just now - long may it continue. As for the Mondeo jibes? Well I've not actually had any yet, but anyway, with super cheap parts prices courtesy of the 'Blue Oval', I reckon I'll have the last laugh on that score anyway!
  5. Hi Peter, The garage I used quoted me around £250.00 inc vat for the secondary clean, which includes the EGR valves and a number of other ancillary equipment items (I think the DPF was mentioned but can't be sure). It's a much longer process and they need the car all day, as opposed to the 2 hours for the standard clean. I shall definitely have it done, as on the strength of yesterday's clean, the hot start problem has been sorted. The garage is in Coleshill, no far from you, so if you're interested let me know and I'll give you their details. Next up for me is a major service and with a bit of luck, I'm hoping all should be back to normal. I'm sure you will be pleased with Terraclean and look forward to hearing the outcome. All the best Phil
  6. Hi Peter, I've just got the car back from the Terraclean process and the difference is immediate and very positive. First up the hot starting issue is significantly better, in fact virtually eliminated. The best £96.00 (inc. VAT) I've ever spent. Whilst there, the lads told me they have just acquired an additional Terraclean unit which cleans all the engine ancillary's such as the ERG valve etc. The process I've had done cleans the injectors and engine internals etc. Apparently, when they clean ERG valves they come up like new and performance is noticeably improved. Unfortunately, the process takes much longer - a full day, so the cost is greater, but I'll have it done at some point. So next up is to give it a full service and change the fuel filter and hopefully that will resolve the problem. I can totally recommend the Terraclean though. The car runs really well and the performance is much sharper. I'm sure you will be pleased when you have yours done! All the best Phil
  7. Hi Peter, I've booked in to have the car Terracleaned next week, so will report back on the outcome. I have to say that I'm really not impressed with the two Jaguar dealers I've spoken to so far. How can you justify £240.00 plus vat for a simple software update when there are good Jaguar specialists offering a full 12,500 service, including parts, labour and vat for just over £200.00? In the short time that I've had it, I've been so pleased with the car that I had even contemplated looking for a XK8 as a weekend toy as prices of earlier X100's are very good right now. Jaguar prices are funny - very expensive when new, then plummet like a stone until they achieve 'classic' status and then start to rise again. However, dealership service would put me off buying another one! Phil
  8. Hi Peter, That's an interesting thought, especially as I planned to go down the Terraclean route any way, so many thanks for helpful suggestion. I'll have a word with the guy's in Coleshill and get it booked in. All the best Phil
  9. I recently bought my X Type diesel knowing it had a hot starting issue which I believed could be overcome by an ECU software update at a cost of around £60.00. I've looked at various posts and have noticed a number of people talking about an 'ECU re-flash' which I assume is the software update. Today I approached a local Jag dealer and an independent. The Jag dealer confirmed that a software upgrade was available, but it didn't work for all X Types and they would have to check the VIN number to see if my car was suitable for it. If it was the cost would be £240.00 plus VAT, as they had to run the programme for a couple of hours. This is significantly more expensive than what I had previously been told. Can anyone advise what they have been paying for this upgrade recently please? The independent checked with a main dealer and confirmed the upgrade was available, but the fault, in view of the mileage - 104K - was more likely to be worn injectors and at £200.00 each, plus fitting and VAT, and suggested I live with the problem if I can as the age of the car - it's a 2005 - makes the viability of doing the work borderline. I would be grateful for any thoughts or advice on what to do next please. I live near Tamworth, close to Birmingham. Many thanks, Phil
  10. Hi Mick, many thanks for the information. I'll get the upgrade done as a priority. I was then thinking of having it Terracleaned, as I've heard great reports and there's a company close by in Coleshill who I trust and offer this service, but I'll be calling into Halfrauds tomorrow for the Millers fuel additive and ordering the Castrol 2 stroke oil, as I really like what you've done with your car. The next stage will be to speak to Celtic and hopefully get that done next month. Hi Peter, as I live on Drayton Lane, I'll look out for you if you're passing through of a weekend! If the car's outside, pop in for a cuppa. All the best from Phil
  11. Hi Peter, Many thanks for checking into the problem and it's good to know that I have been given correct information by the vendor, which bodes well for the car. I live in Drayton Bassett, not far from you. I'll give Northfield Garage a call tomorrow and find out what they suggest. Best regards Phil
  12. Hi everyone, my name is Phil and I'm new to all things Jaguar - though have admired the brand for many years. I've just got my first Jaguar - an X Type Sport Premium 2.0D Estate (though I prefer the American name - Sportwagon) in that beautiful colour Ultraviolet. It's a 2005 car with 104K miles, full service history and appears to be immaculate apart from a couple of stone chips. It's a fairly high spec car with some nice options including full leather heated and electric memory seats, cruise, power fold mirrors. Looking at the specification it seems it would have been well over £30K when new and now 9 years later I've got it for about 1/10th of that. Amazing value, or a disaster waiting to happen. I hope it's the former, but I'll wait and see! I particularly wanted a 'British' car. I work in marketing with British manufacturing companies and feel it is important to support the 'brand'. Also, I wanted something a bit different to the seemingly endless amount of German cars on the roads these days. I've not have my car long, but so far I'm well pleased. This forum also looks great, with lots of helpful enthusiasts so I look forward to chatting with you guys over the coming months. It seems to be a valuable resource of information too. I was really interested to read Micks post on Celtic Tuning and also the information on Millers and Castrol additives to reduce engine noise and improve combustion. I plan to try this out myself. The car does have one fault - cold starting is fine, but when hot, it starts in 'limp mode?' at 500 RPM for 3-5 seconds, then clears and runs perfectly. I've been told there's a software upgrade that solves this issue for around £60.00 plus an overnight stay at a Jaguar dealers, as it has to be carried out when the engine is cold. I would appreciate any thoughts or knowledge of this please. Otherwise, a fabulous car so far and looking forward to being part of this community. Many thanks from Phil
