  1. Thanks for the info, really useful. Decided to let the local mechanic do it!
  2. I've bought a new linkage from Jaguar, so the next step is to fit it. Has anyone done that? I had a look, but couldn't find any instructions. Apologies if I've missed something obvious.
  3. Thanks for the input everyone. I took the car to a garage that seems to deal in specialist cars - as in makes besides the ubiquitous Renault, Peugeot and Citroen - and he located the noise as coming from the belt that drives the alternator. He's going to replace belt and pulleys, plus investigate the other problems and give the car a service. Was going to do the latter myself, but when he quoted me the prices I couldn't refuse. So we'll see what happens. I'm still not super optimistic. The air filter has clean seems to have improved the running of the motor, but the engine warning light is still on.
  4. Hi, thanks for your reply. I included the codes because that's what people ask for. The car is a 3.0 petrol, so I'm not sure what you mean by turbo hose - where would I find it? I took the air filter off to find that it was filthy and looked like it hadn't been changed in long while, although it should have been last service, and that the cover hadn't been put on correctly, as in the lugs at the back weren't engaged. That brings me to another question: what is the correct size for replacement? Sites I've checked quote two slightly different sizes, one 298mm in length and the other 310mm.
  5. Checked the error codes, P1074 and P1000 Started about three weeks ago when I picked the care up after several weeks in the garage. Required jump start, then, about 1km out, went into limp home mode with gearbox fault message showing. Replaced battery, but on the way back to the garage the engine light and the battery light came on. Checked battery voltage - 11.99v with motor off, 12.40v motor idling. Picked the car up yesterday, started fine but engine light still on, though battery light turned itself off. Since then, the restricted perfomance message comes on intermittently then turns itself off. There's also whistling noise that increases/decreases with engine revs. I'll check the air filter today, but am wondering what else it could be. I'm also a little concerned by the battery readings, which seem a bit low. Your help much appreciated. I should add there is no Jaguar dealer or mechanic for miles around, and its a 40km round trip to the closest town, which has a Ford dealer.
  6. Thanks for all your quick replies! I should mention that the winter tyres have done a lot less kms than the Dunlops, mostly on the motorway, plus the tread pattern is totally different, so maybe any problems were less easy to see. They're a lot quieter than both the Dunlops and the Pirellis.
  7. Hi, I'm new here and have a problem. Car is a 2003 model 3 litre automatic, 220000kms. Just swapped over my winter tires for summer ones, and the mechanic has told me the types are deformed, with the worst being at the back. They're Dunlop Sports Maxx, and were put on the car 12 months ago to replace some Pirellis which were also deformed. The car does about 10000kms per year, so the Dunlops would have done roughly 6000 kms. This seems a minuscule amount to have a problem like this, and I'd like to find a solution. The mechanic suggested shock absorbers, given the kilometrage of the car, 220000, plus tyre change. I've never heard of this, so I rang a Jaguar dealer - closest is 200kms away - who agreed that could be the problem but also said the tyres weren't a good match for the car, as they do 'step' (best translation i can think of). Winter tyres, Contis, seem fine, and they've seen 2 winters. Any thoughts? I don't want go on spending 1000€ per year on tyres, seems ridiculous.
