  1. Sorry it's taken so long to reply but thanks for the responses. Since posting I haven't tried to remove the residue yet but I think I'll try heating it up and using T-Cut and take it from there. I wouldn't normally want to remove the badges, it's not something I've done with previous cars and hadn't originally intended on doing it. However, the leaping jaguar on my car looked really worn and had started to come off the car as if someone previously tried to remove it and gave up. I took it off because it made the rest of the car look tatty and I think it does look better without it now. I figured since it looked better without the first badge then maybe it could look good (neater, maybe) without the rest but I've since changed my mind. I'll sort the sticky residue and leave the rest as is! Cheers, Bryan
  2. Hi all, I recently decided to remove the leaping jaguar badge from the rear of my car as it looked quite tatty and the sticky foam had started to peel away. I've since discovered that one of the previous owners decided it would be a good idea to secure this by gluing it (!) down. I'd be happy to take suggestions on what you think would be best to get rid of the glue residue as I've tried white spirit and cellulose thinners both to no avail. However, the reason for my post is I'm looking to see what people's opinion is on removing the "X-Type" and "2.2D" badges as well. I think the car looks better without the leaping jaguar badge but I'm curious to see what people think about this practice and whether they've done it to their own car or not. Bryan
  3. Thanks David, that's really helpful. Like I said, I've got anti-corrosion stuff coming shortly but I'll pick up some of the paint that you mentioned and coat the metal with that once I've treated the rust.
  4. Hi David, That's certainly the kind of thing I was referring to. It looks like you've just coated them with some sort of anti-corrosion paint rather than replacing the sills, is that right? Also, how did you get the sill covers off? I'm going to be picking the Jaguar up over the next couple of days and I'm intending on treating the body with ACF-50 to halt any further damage. Cheers, Bryan
  5. Hi Nick, Did you treat yours at all or have you been keeping it in a garage? As far as I can see the rust problems aren't a myth as I've seen a few horrendous pictures of sills more or less disintegrating with rust. Apparently this issue was sorted for post 2003 cars but I think they're still prone to rust more than usual. Mine certainly does have some corrosion underneath but the metal still looks pretty healthy. The rear window strips of mine had bubbled too but the garage have since replaced them. According to them it's about £20 per strip. Do you find it a pretty reliable car? My main concern with it after finding the engine ran well was the corrosion but hopefully, from what I can see, this won't be as big an issue as I'd imagined.
  6. Thanks again guys. The car is now ready to be collected and I'm going to see it this week to make sure everything's in order. If all checks out then I hope to pick up on Wednesday! Also, after some research I discovered an anti-corrosion product called ACF 50 so I've ordered myself a bottle and will attack the underside of the car once both arrive. I'll stick some pictures up once she arrives. Cheers, Bryan
  7. Thanks for the replies. I'm sure she'll come round to the idea once she tries the heated seats. Also, beyond the annual servicing of the car what do you guys normally do for routine maintenance? I'm not terribly mechanically minded but would like to learn to do whatever I can to keep her running smoothly. Thanks again Bryan
  8. Hi all, I've been searching for a new car for the last few months. It started out as being something sensible to replace my 14 plate Focus but I just kept coming back to the X-Type. The mrs doesn't like it but I think that's because we're both 21 and she doeesn't consider it a young man's car! However, I've since put a deposit down on one and I'm currently waiting on it being prepared. 55 plate 2.2d SE with 42,000 miles for £4,500. It's more than I was going to pay but they've included a new MOT (plus tyres/ brakes if advisories), 3 months warranty, a service and they're replacing a couple of bits of trim. Light metallic blue with full cream leather interior. The reason I'm posting is that I am well aware of the issues they suffer with corrosion underneath. The garage (surprisingly) let us take a good look underneath and while there are some areas of rust, it all seems pretty superficial. I didn't venture to take the side skirtings off as I think we were pushing our luck already. What I am wondering is if anyone can tell me what's best to treat the rust? It's going to be off the road for a week or so prior to use so I'm planning on getting any necessary work done in that time. Does anyone have any experience in treating this themselves? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bryan
  9. Hi everyone, I've been reading this forum for a while and thought I'd finally join looking for some advice. I'm getting rid of my current car soon (14 plate Focus 1.6 TDCI) and have been in a turmoil over what to get next. I wanted an X-Type originally but was put off with the awful sill corrosion I was so warned about. I've been looking at other cars (BMWs, Hondas, etc.) however none have taken my fancy quite like the Jaguars have. So I've come full circle to wanting a Jaguar again after lurching around Autotrader so much. So I guess my question is, with the sill corrosion borne in mind (and other apparent reliability issues) are they still a sound car to buy? I'm looking for something as new as possible, certainly post facelift. 2.0 or 2.2D (most likely the latter) and Sovereign spec with a cream interior. My ideal colour would be the metallic red however if the interior is right then I could take a compromise on the paint. All in I'm looking to spend up to about £6,500 although hopefully less. I'm really looking for some input as to what other members prefer - private versus trade sellers, what to look for to avoid, how much mileage is too much, etc - to help steer me in the right direction. Any help would certainly be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Bryan
